Brief side note to say that I finished the audiobook of Zen Cho's The True Queen, and the queer subtext from the first book? Is officially canon text, and also the "general queerness" knob was turned up to, like, eleven for this book, so.

If you like period romances, or might like them if the were only more racially diverse and also had magic and dragons and queer people and stuff (and also I am 100% interpreting one of the main characters as dyslexic), I highly recommend this series. First book is Sorcerer to the Crown, only two out so far, hopefully more to come???

here's the problem, though

those are original fiction and they are bigger than ten thousand words

fanfic? this week I have read lalaietha's your blue-eyed boys, plus two of the attached series of shorter pieces (I skimmed a bunch of the sex and some of the mental horror), and followed that with Vathara's Embers, for a cumulative total of 1.6M words, not counting anything in, like, an actual fandom I'm actually active in

(I mean this week might be an outlier? but it's not spiders georg, either)

wanna guess when I last read a novel?

because I think that was Austin Chant's Peter Darling, so no later than the beginning of this past August

the one before that? probably Shira Glassman's Knit One, Girl Two, which was definitely the preceding December

Yeah, I get most of my original fiction "reading" done in audio format these days. And by "most" I mean "nearly all". Good for quiet chores/crafts and long commutes, but less so for fanfic consumption and/or creation.

I think my most recent non-audio original fiction books were Effie Calvin's The Queen of Ieflaria and Daughter of the Sun? Which aren't as racially diverse, but are more queer, shorter, and quicker to get engaged in, IMO. (Again, the Sorcerer books are amazing, but are not popcorn books. I had to actually pay attention a lot of times with them and not just coast. ...Mostly because of the language, I'm pretty sure.)

I have idk five Audible credits atm. Haven't used them bc I haven't listened to any audiobooks at all since...well it was in Delaware, anyway. (And nonfiction. And not more than a couple chapters.)

I'll admit, my life setup is fairly convenient for finding time to listen to audibooks and podcasts and such.

That said, there's no harm in nabbing a couple of audiobooks for a rainy day before Audible eats your credits, IMO. (And The Queen of Ieflaria was recently released as an audiobook as well, so...)

You do you, though. If you don't think you'll get around to them, I'm not going to pressure you into getting them.

I love Zen Cho's writing and the Sorcerer series is excellent. I'm in the middle of The True Queen now.

It is just so good and the romantic arcs are so satisfying and just--! *gushes* I absolutely have to get the short story collection now.
