H'okay, now that the mostly-positive news is out of the way (We survived the derecho! We have power again!), I've got two more bits of news, one bad-ish, one more neutral-ish.

The bad-ish news is that Chester has a back injury and is doing poorly. He's having a lot of difficulty moving his back legs, which is not great for a four-legged creature trying to get around. (Not great in general, but a little bit of extra not-great is that it came to a head smack-dab in the middle of the power outage, so Mom had to make an emergency vet trip with no call ahead of time.) He got a diagnosis (exploded disc or something?), and it's not unexpected for a dachshund to have back problems, but we naturally wish it never happened. He's currently on pain meds and minimal exercise, and we hope he'll be back to being energetic and more-or-less fully mended in a week or two, but he is no longer allowed to go up and down the stairs or to jump up on anything. Once he gets his energy back, I'm sure that'll disappoint him; right now, he mostly wants to nap.

The more neutral-ish news is that, with the hotel only barely having enough work to employ one of us six bakers, I've got a temporary job with the connected community college. I'm monitoring people coming in the building, taking temps (with an air temp-taker I can use from six inches away) and making sure they've got masks and stuff before going into the building proper. It pays about as well as my baking job, and has only a few less hours a week. It's good news because it means I'll have income again (the hotel stopped being able to pay us at the end of May) and also because it'll get my parents off my back about getting a job; the job itself is pretty close to what I'd consider ideal, since it's all on location with plenty of downtime I can use to to do quiet activities if I want (such as crocheting, reading, or even writing), and there's honestly not a whole lot of traffic to monitor in the first place.

The downside is... there's still Covid. The reason I have this job is Covid, because it's to monitor Covid, and because my other job is not available because Covid. It's definitely not as risky as, say, being a cashier, and is honestly currently a lot less risky than I was worried it'd be when I accepted, but still. I don't know how long it'll stay this low-risk.

Anyway, job officially started Monday, where I arrived right on time to have to hide out in a stairwell instead of start because derecho 😅 I ended up doing about half an hour of work before being ushered back into the stairwell, then another ten to twenty minutes before we completely closed down for the day. I was assured I would still be paid for the entire shift, then went home to no power, and eventually the knowledge that campus would be closed for the rest of the week. So I guess I kinda start next week, instead!
