Mom just took Chester in for his final vet visit.
On Monday, Chester woke up in terrible pain; his regular vet recommended surgery. I drove Mom up to the city where I usually work (in non-Covid times) to see a second vet, just in case, who recommended the same thing; it was snowing, and I felt more confident about driving in that than she might be, considering the circumstances. The vet there recommended surgery as well, said Chester had a 50% chance of regaining the function in his hindquarters with it, but only 25% chance without.
Mom initially wanted to go for it, so I started driving the two hours to the surgeon who would be able to do the procedure. During the drive she re-thought things and decided it wasn't worth putting Chester through the extra pain and stress for only a fifty percent chance that he'd be able to walk on all fours again, especially with the commute, so we turned around.
She especially was prepared to give him the best life she could, but this morning decided he was in too much pain in general, and he no longer had enough quality of life.
We'll miss you, wonderful, beloved dog; you were a good, sweet boy.
I'm probably going to be a little tender over the next few days. Hugs welcome, but I'm not sure that I'll be replying to any comments on this post.
