Lurker Day approaching; wildlife
Aug. 17th, 2011 07:23 pmWhat's this? Could it be that I'm actually remembering the approach of my semi-annual pseudo-holiday on my own and in a timely manner? Why, it appears so!
What's more, I'm actually even somewhat active in a fandom this time around. This is a rather strange feeling for me. Gosh, there's so much I could do! Suddenly the idea of making banners is appealing again. And fic! I could write fic! ...Not that I have much inspiration outside of whatever kink meme prompts catch my eye, but I can really live with that. It actually kind-of makes things easier on me. At the very least, I feel like I can out-manoeuvre the Extra Long Story bullet a little better.
Socially, I suppose I could get a Tumblr and/or an AO3 account. I don't know how much actual socializing I would do on either of those, though I wouldn't mind A) getting my crocheted stuff a little extra publicity, or B) not having to reaffirm that I'm of legal age to read smut every time I close my browser. The actual set up might be irritating, and there's a nice heap of social anxiety to go with either, but I'm pretty sure I was also nervous about getting an account on FF.net, so there's that to consider.
Productivity-wise, well, I already mentioned the possibility of more banners. (Which I should add image descriptions for this year if I do go for it.) If I finish another kink meme fill by then, I could post it non-anonymously, as well. (Gawd, the kink meme is like an actual fannish sub-category for me at this point XD) The vargouille would probably be a good option for
hooked_on_anime, especially as I've been sitting on it for so long - and for whatever reason I don't want to post the Basic Homestuck Sprite (Large) until after that.
I'm technically going to be on the road then, though, so I should definitely get as much done as far in advance as possible. I don't imagine that Dreamwidth will have the scheduled post feature ready by then, but I can always do my usual back-up of "Make the post on your journal, mark it as private, then re-mark it as public and update the date when it's time". I'm sure I'll be able to get some post updating/actual posting done both before and after we hit the road, though that's hardly ideal considering that we'll have a very long trip ahead of us. Maybe I can save some for post-trip and just hope we make a rest stop somewhere that has free WiFi along the way; that would definitely work.
Hmmm; food for thought.

There's been a hummingbird hanging around our backyard for the past week or two; we haven't gotten them too often in the past, so it's pretty neat to see one flitting around :) I saw it twice today - and each time it's taken a rest for at least part of the sighting. It's - interesting, I guess, to see one at rest? IDK, I guess I have them mentally characterized as either in motion, taking care of a nest/nestlings, or sleeping, though that's really rather silly. If I had to consume my body weight in sugar every day just to move about normally, I'm sure I'd take as many opportunities to rest as I could!
Either way, Hummingbirds At Rest sounds like a great band/album/book/movie/wev name :)

Crochet-wise, I'm this close to being done with Vincent!Pony. He just needs his eyes, some cloak clasps, and a cutie mark/butt tattoo. Honestly, I'm a little stumped as to what I'm going to do for his cutie mark :/ The image I've been using has the appropriate spot covered by his cape. It also doesn't have one for Cloud, who doesn't have that excuse, and Sephiroth's is indistinct. Zach doesn't appear at all. Their names can help, to a certain extent, but that's also really tempting me to make Tifa's a heart-shaped lock rather than mountains - it's both literal and incredibly pony, and also implies rather less that her special talent is'giant boobs' 'great tracts of land', though what that would make her special talent I've no real idea.
Really, this whole thing would probably be easier if I were more familiar with the FFVII collective. *sigh* Screw it, I'mma go make more mini Squiddles until I either think of something or someone can help me out with this.
Incidentally, while Vincent!Pony's cape does not go up so far as to cover his nose, it still looks really fucking fantastic. I tried the "Make the collar big enough he can drown in it" option and it just looked ridiculous, so I went and crocheted a tattered end on the cape-y bit instead :3b It's maybe a bit more even than verisimilitude would allow - divides every three stitches by width - but is otherwise downright awesome, if I do say so myself.
Also, I am extra disappointed that my parents apparently sold our copy of Advent Children after I moved out; I rather like to "watch" related things while I'm working on a project, and now I'm a bit SOL. Maybe I can buy the MVIX from C and then convert and download a bunch of Lets Plays from YouTube or something for future FFVII ponies.

Date: 2011-08-18 02:21 pm (UTC)Hmm, since Vincent's big thing in-game is transforming into monsters (the last of which is Chaos), maybe a chaos symbol, if such a thing exists?

Date: 2011-08-18 07:45 pm (UTC)Oh! Oh! Oh! A butterfly! Or wait! A butterfly with fractal wings! ...Or maybe just a fractal. That would probably work best. Oooo, especially if I can find one in red, white, and black :D

Date: 2011-08-18 09:51 pm (UTC)I have learned something today! Wikipedia tells me there's an actual Symbol of Chaos, though I don't know how feasible that is to crochet. o.o
I like Tifa having a little heart-shaped lock. That's very appropriate, methinks. <3

Date: 2011-08-20 06:43 am (UTC)Oh, cool! I usually paint onto felt and then hot-glue that in place rather than actually crocheting cutie marks or eyes, but either way it's simpler.
I'll have to double-check with my friend, but I may be going with that. Makes me glad I have gold and silver fabric paint :)

Date: 2011-08-18 01:36 am (UTC)Also, I thought Cloud's was left blank for a reason - that's sort of his thing, being nondescript...

Date: 2011-08-18 03:59 am (UTC)A sparkley heart!*shot*It's still decidedly odd for a pony of his age/maturity not to have a cutie mark. Though I suppose that exposure to mako might have the potential to either vanish or alter cutie marks. Bluh; maybe I shoulda just read the fic this image goes with. Not that the fic is necessarily based on the image, or vice versa; I certainly didn't check...
Back on topic, I'd say that an actual cloud might work, especially if it's vaguely shaped like something but not enough like any one thing that you'd definitely know what it is by looking at it. Though I would be a bit bothered to give him something so close to Cid's (which I think is pretty good for him). I'm also tempted by that lion ornament he was wearing in Advent Children, though I'm not entirely sure how well that would fit :/ Again, I'm not as canon-familiar as would probably be ideal for this sort of thing.

Date: 2011-08-18 11:26 pm (UTC)Y-YEAH WELL. Maybe you should do a cloud covered in belts and zippers inside zippers with grommets and SWORD
Also, the whole lion thing seemed pretty ad hoc.......

Date: 2011-08-18 07:38 pm (UTC)I did see one chasing a sparrow yesterday, which was a bit of a hilarious parallel to redwing blackbirds chasing crows, but also different?
