One last moment of grief
Jun. 7th, 2022 11:33 pmAI Execs forgot to remove me from the staff mailing list, so I just got to read an email obliquely shaming me for wanting to protect people from Covid.
I've sent them a separate, direct email to alert them to their oversight. I kept it nice and professional, too, instead of replying directly to the staff list via the email in question and attaching screencaps of the entire "conversation" we had.
As much as some part of me wants to be kept in the loop on AnimeIowa behind-the-scenes, I know it will ultimately be healthier for me to make this separation now and to receive any news at one or more removeβor not at all.
(Hugs welcome again. I was doing a lot better, but I really, really shouldn't have read that email.)

Date: 2022-06-09 04:47 am (UTC)That said, the guy who alerted me to the mask bullshit in the first place has taken every lesson I learned the hard way and gone through the proper channels to try and get some official meeting time this Saturday to try and discuss all the reasons I left, including the ones left out of the letter. He BCC'd me on the email he sent, and I felt very supported π₯°

Date: 2022-06-09 04:19 am (UTC)Ugh, that's shitty both that they didn't take you off the list, and that they were being kind of passive-aggressive about you in the email. Yuck.
It's definitely better to separate from it, but I'm extremely sorry it ended this way.
Sounds like (per seeing some chatter on tumblr) Anime Expo in LA pulled something similar - the venue is requiring masks, but previously the con was requiring proof of vax or negative test. They just removed that requirement a month or so before the con, and it sounds like a lot of people are upset. Vendors are pretty much screwed, and can't now back out without taking a huge financial hit.
So... the shitty behavior is certainly going around. :/

Date: 2022-06-09 04:34 am (UTC)Yeah, it looks like the person who might be in charge of that is someone the con hasn't heard from in, like, a month, so I can't 100% blame them in this case? But it was still a shitty email to get.
The guy who first alerted me to the mask mandate changing has sent an appeal up the ladder for some official discussion time at the meeting this Saturday, at least, and I sincerely hope something good comes of it.
Ugh, what is with anime cons specifically pulling this shit? AI is still requiring proof of a negative test from within 48 hours of attendees picking up their badge, but they can voluntarily share vaccination proof instead; that said, I have no idea how easy either one would be to fake. Knowing intimately that there are strains that can bypass the vaccine out there and hearing at least one report of someone who tested positive and went to a convention anyway... it's entirely too easy to imagine someone testing positive, attending the con anyway by showing their vaccine card instead of the positive test, and spreading a vaccine-busting strain of Covid to AI's attendees, staff, and their loved ones by extension. (...I should mention this to my staff ally, come to think of it.)
I got ranty...
Date: 2022-06-09 05:24 am (UTC)I do hope something good does come of that! I feel like it's probably not likely that they'll change their minds (after scrambling hard to cover their asses), but it would be nice.
Right?? I know that fake vax cards were a pretty heavily purchased item, and there are so many images out there of test results, I can see it being quite easy to make a template that lets you fake that as well. Which is pretty dismal, but I'm sure that there will be quite a few people who fake it.
Same here - I'm triple vaxxed, and as far as I know was exposed fairly minorly (spoke to the positive-but-asymptomatic student in close proximity for under a minute, spoke to the positive-and-symptomatic-but-triple-vaxxed driver across the room), yet I caught it! Maybe only because I was already recovering from the flu, so my immune system wasn't at its best, but even so! That shit spread FAST AND HARD.
Masks aren't perfect, but they HELP. Even with a positive case, they dramatically reduce the chances of that person spreading it.
I KNOW I've had people who likely knew they were positive and came in anyway, because we're scheduling months out - people don't want the inconvenience of rescheduling.
Our ex head of HR actually TOLD one of our managers NOT to test. The manager reported that her husband was positive, and that she was starting to show symptoms. They told her not to test, because they didn't want her to be forced to quarantine. They just told her to come to work and not tell anyone. (This was before home tests were readily available.)
You should definitely mention it to your friends/allies on staff.
