soc_puppetAnd here's the big one! Ordered by how many pictures they have, from least to most. PegaCid trounces Dragon by one photo; I guess it's the accessories :P
Immediately adopted by the Brony community for his resemblance to the tenth doctor and his time-related cutiemark, Dr. Whooves (or Dr. Whoof, if you prefer). He was fairly straightforward to crochet and put together. I was originally hoping to have him finished (and thus be able to hock him) for AnimeIowa, but that didn't happen. He's finished now, though! Now I just need to slap his picture/s up somewhere I can potentially sell him...
Congratulatory wedding present for the Japanese exchange student who stayed with us for a while when I was in high school, with thanks again to Mati and Chash for the suggestion. In Japan, Red-Crowned Cranes represent luck, longevity, and fidelity (all of which I'm sure I can rant about another time, but we're going with it here).
They involved a little bit more color changing and yarn cutting/tying than I usually like - that is, any at all within a discrete body part, especially at that size - but I think they turned out quite well for it. Mom's busy putting together a box to send to Tomoko, and these two will be in it. I hope they'll be well received.
Dragon facing left, wings at folded, partly folded, and spread positions. The final picture is from slightly above as well. I messed up the names a bit, but at least they don't have numbers in them.
Dragon facing mostly right and directly right, wings in folded and unfolded-and-up positions respectively. I think the unfolded-and-up one is the most dramatic of the batch, which makes it an extra shame that it turned out blurry :/
Dragon from the direct front, wings unfolded and folded, and from the back, wings folded. I wanted to show a variety of positions of both the wings and the dragon itself, in case people were curious about how it was put together. I will almost certainly be selling the pattern (with all the money to ME, unlike a lot of patterns I'm thinking of selling) and will probably be making a multi-color dragon to take pictures of for that, but this one demonstrates the concept nicely.
I personally love the extra definition in the facial region, as well as the overall shape. His face is the most defined since the vargouille (whose wing pattern I used), and he could balance on his front legs before I added the back ones. I'm less fond of the degree of buckling in his forelimbs, but I can probably correct that without too much difficulty. I'm also less fond of how little support the wires in his wings give; I'll have to keep a sharp lookout for stronger wire.
I'm ignoring how his headflaps are unrealistically long and would probably be torn up by him flapping his wings, since I like my color choices and transitions too much :P I definitely should've crocheted his body better; I don't know what it is about red yarn that it isn't necessarily for other colors, but the white stuffing shows through something awful X( I may go through with the scraps of extra yarn I still have and individually cover those spots up.
I did almost run out of yarn while making him; I was working with a skein of old secondhand yarn that'd been sitting in the sun a well, so there was little to no chance of finding a match if it came down to it. I probably would've re-done his wings almost entirely in orange at that point. Luckily, I didn't have to :)b
Standard PegaCid. I feel somewhat ethically weird about actually having made him a cigarette, as standard US anti-drug propaganda was pounded pretty thoroughly into my head at a young age, but it's accurate to the character so I went with it.
Like Vincent, all of his clothes come off, which leads us to...
Naked PegaCid! Plus jacket and accessories. I'm not entirely sure why I decided to leave the cig behind his ear instead of putting it with the other accessories, but wev.
You can't see it from the picture, but the entire scarf is the same width, and the corners of one end are stitched together to form a loop. I pulled the other end through that loop to keep it around his neck. I keep most of it folded up, but the loose end I leave unfolded for a better visual effect. His goggles are technically a little loose, but they do also fit over his eyes as shown:

I am so ridiculously pleased with his jacket. I do have to fold his wings over to get them to fit through the holes, but it fits well once it's on him and they go back to their usual shape with ease. It'll make Aeris' jacket that much easier ('specially since she doesn't need wing holes, alicorn or not). His boots I'm less fond of, but whatever. They're boots. He wants fancy horseshoes, he can borrow Vincent's.
Like the other two pegasus ponies I've made, Cid's wings ended up kinda floppy and I usually end up folding them over each other on his back. They'll mostly stand at attention when I want them to, though.
Anyway, Cloud is next on the list. His buyer has requested he go blank-flank, due to canon memory and identity issues - which, well, I can't argue with that :P

Date: 2011-10-06 01:02 am (UTC)Thank you ^_^ I've worked wire into my crochet projects before but never quite at this scale, so I'm really pleased it turned out well :) The wings are definitely floppier than I'd like, so I'll probably reinforce them better on the next one, and recommend other folks do the same, but it's definitely a great first try. [/crafting blah blah] I also hope to make a bundle on his pattern, which should come as no surprise ^_~
He was a lot of fun, though I don't know if I made his eyes "grumpy" enough X3
Done and better! They'll be living together starting this weekend :DDD I make no promises on pictures, though.
