I know that one Tumblr post claims that Marichat is the preferred Love Square ship in Miraculous Ladybug because everyone who likes it is secretly (or less secretly) a furry, and I also know that the "true selves" bit has been tossed around quite a lot (particularly by Marichat fans), but I think I may have landed on a deeper reason?

Let's face it, y'all. We ship the Love Square for the dramatic irony, and of the four sides, Marichat has the highest level of dramatic irony going for it, whereas Ladrien (the least popular/"most boring" side) has the lowest.

I think part of it is Marichat is the most in line with traditional gender roles (especially if Marinette's home is serving as Adrien's comfort and refuge) and Ladrien is the least, but that's a much less fun explanation than yours

Oh yeah, I definitely buy that, but I'm pretty sure that my explanation has gotta be at least half of it.

I'm not up to date on what's been going on with the show, but last I saw, it's also the one that lends itself to the most "how the heck does this happen" fanfic premises. Like, if Ladybug expresses interest in Adrien or vice versa, making the other one not go for it requires contrivance. If they're both supers or both civilians, there's fewer identity shenanigans, and ML is all about identity shenanigans. But to make Marichat work, you need to start with explaining how you get there, and so it sparks interest.

Also a good point! I don't usually write them actually getting together without an identity reveal by at least one of them, but apparently when I stick to "no reveals" it tends to be Ladrien anyway, so I might be Spiders Georg in this case 😂
