I'm getting closer to giving up Tumblr. I'm not there yet, I don't think, but the time is looming on the horizon. I'm hoping that, once I get everything cleaned up and organized in my room (and hopefully reorganized the record room a little more), I'll end up with both the space and the desire to do more fun, non-internet stuff.

I might also try to find a fandom that's active on Dreamwidth to get into. If I can have an active fandom here, I think that'll really help me spend more meaningful time here. Tumblr has given me a lot, and I've met a lot of cool people there, but as the site structure is subject to more and more changes, it's less of a home.

I dunno. I'm pretty sure my account is close to reaching its ten year anniversary. Maybe that would be a good time to move out.

Edit: My mood took a pretty significant sharp turn downward when I started contemplating leaving Tumblr, which is an important data point. At the moment, I'm going to interpret it as, "Don't think too much about leaving just yet (unless something drastically untenable happens), and definitely dedicate yourself to shoring up other positive outlets". The second part is good either way, and the first part seems safe enough overall.

Good luck figuring out what's good for you <3 It's really, really hard. Having a multiple of positive outlets cannot hurt indeed. I probably should be more deliberate about setting more up as well.

That's the plan, at any rate! Make everywhere else more fun than Tumblr, and then maybe I can start ignoring Tumblr. Dunno how I'll manage that, but it's worth a shot!

It's still the best fit for me for a bunch of reasons, but they are making everything so much worse with all these pointless changes. I keep doing feedback/glitch reports in the hopes that if enough people complain they will roll some of this crap back.

I'm not too hopeful, unfortunately. Trivial things they might roll back, like the vanishing userpics recently, but big things like the dash redesign? Probably not unless someone comes in with a cash incentive. It really, really sucks when a platform you love starts being openly hostile to you.

I tried to tumblr, but there were a variety of things about it that did not work for me long term and it was not a format that really suited me. Unfortunately, I have a body of writing there (journal stuff, not, like, fiction) that is tricky to move and which I do not, therefore, have here. *sigh*

Yeah, it's. Well. Format-wise, I definitely prefer Dreamwidth; content-aggregation in general is not my cuppa, especially with the level of pressure a non-zero number of people turn up to try and get others to conform to content aggregating. Like, I get that's what the site is built for, but that's not why I went to Tumblr; I went to Tumblr because that's where the people were. If Dreamwidth were even half as active as Tumblr, I might not have gotten an account there at all. I'm doing my best to make my little corner of Dreamwidth a fun place to be for the people who are here, but still.

Anyway. Rambling over, general sympathies to you, etc. There's definitely a few not!fics I need to move over from my side account, if nothing else...

I feel like wanting to leave tumblr is a looming threat for me, too. I hate not feeling like I have a replacement for it if I do, and I'm not ready to jump ship just yet, but...

I feel like my time on Dreamwidth is better quality and more rewarding, but it doesn't allow for the same discovery of art and interesting tidbits and weird deep dives into topics I'd never have thought to look into that tumblr does. I know how much I'd miss that, and don't know where else to reliably find it (because that's the kind of thing that algorithmic sites are terrible for.)

Yeah, Tumblr's been a sinking ship for a while now. I've been closer to leaving (most recently when my dash went completely bonkers and wasn't showing me a longtime mutual's posts, even when I reblogged said posts directly from them), but I'm not quite there yet, as demonstrated by my mood :P Still, knowing how close I got made me decide that I should probably at least be planning for how to let go when I do finally reach my limit.

I think that's a place where communities have the potential to shine; even outside of communities dedicated to specific topics or subgroups of people (access_fandom or queerly_beloved for example), I remember things like Scans Daily back on LJ, and other communities dedicated to posting one quality photo of a particular celebrity every day, which I know have Tumblr equivalents. And then there's things like metaquotes, though the old LJ one was much more trafficked and had more of a balance between political and entertaining. Anyway, communities aren't a perfect solution; it would be best paired with users sharing more about their own interests and linking things outside of Dreamwidth on the regular. But even one Dreamwidth community along the lines of "One cool scientific article per day!", or getting Monterey Bay Aquarium set up over here, has potential to open some horizons, IMO.

It has felt like a sinking ship, and while I'm not quite ready to leave, it's feeling upsettingly inevitable. (I remember you having that issue with a mutual's posts not showing up. How annoying and stupid!)

I do think that communities could fill a lot of the void. Single-topic blogs, ones that curate users' art or photography, ones that repost interesting articles or news pieces...
It's not QUITE the same as tumblr (just a different vibe overall, and not nearly as much of a constant content stream), but if it had a broader userbase, it likely COULD provide some of the things I'd miss the most from tumblr.

With twitter utterly imploding (and somehow just... still doing that more by the day), I'd kind of hoped that *something* would take over as a new, viable online space that didn't suck, but no place seems to have wound up with the critical mass to feel promising. (Or they're also privacy-invading, algorithmic nightmares.) My preference is for spaces like DW anyway, so I don't think I'm likely to look too hard at any newer spaces anyway.
