like i'm gonna be real-- this is not good. they can now frame the left as the violent and dangerous people that they've wanted to all this time. they can now actually claim to be the victims that they've been saying they are this whole time. they can use this as a mandate to crack down on everyone who opposes them. with biden already in freefall this is the galvanizing thing that will make those who were unsure about aligning with the democrats the motivation to swing to the republicans in droves. it will give the already united republicans the "moral" authority to condemn not only the elected officials in the democratic party but characterize the entire progressive movement as violent anarchists based on social media reactions. if we were cooked before, we've just entered the flash fryer.

(Honestly, all of that is why a small, cynical part of me is wondering if this wasn't actually staged by Trump supporters, and the miss was supposed to be by a slightly wider margin. I don't think I'm quite that prepared to be a conspiracy theorist about it yet, though. Much more likely that the shooter was actually aiming to do more damage.)

I mean, when Trump was president and there were shootings at synagogues, at black churches, etc., every single time his response was that it was the other side or could've been the other side. The entire right wing, including him, projects and accuses everyone else of everything they do with impunity. So it's not out of the realm of possibility that this was set up by him/his cronies. But I'm not assuming that's the case either, at least not until more info comes out, and info that's decently fact-checked. This is going to be a media shit-show. I only read one article, and it's from the AP, which is supposed to be a good source, and it was one of the shittiest articles I've ever read.

And there were other victims, spectators who were in the line of fire. The whole thing is so terrible.

Current info suggests that he was hit with shrapnel rather than a bullet, which is a mark in the "not staged" column for me, but yeah; while I have no reason at this time to believe it was staged, if we later learn that it was, it also wouldn't surprise me.

The other victims are one reason I'm hoping it wasn't staged. Like, if they were victims of a staged event, that would suck so much more on top of everything else. I don't care if they are MAGA-heads, no one deserves that. (...I am not going to speculate farther than that, I have tempted my brain with conspiracy theories enough tonight already.)

I wouldn't put it past one of those dipshits to "organize" something like this all on their lonesome, without any actual planning, because something about guns makes people so stupid. Admittedly, "lone gunman trying to pull a false flag" would be the absolute most ridiculous way this could happen, but I assume that Trump himself, at least, or his handlers has a little more brains than to actually let people get shot.
