1. We had a nice time at Disneyland this morning. The weather's definitely trending summerish but thankfully not too hot yet.

2. Alexander's hasn't been feeling well for the past few weeks so he hasn't been over for his usual Sunday dinner and hangout, but he was able to make it over tonight. It was good to see him again!

3. Look at these sweeties!

Well, it was a long day

:: Brian and Theo Cort meet someone new... ANYTHING else I could add is a spoiler for something, unfortunately! Part of the Unfair Trades arc in Mercedes, within the Polychrome Heroics universe. ::

:: Author’s note: At this point, there are two ways to proceed. I could list events chronologically, which would mean bouncing repeatedly and rapidly among multiple viewpoints, which I dislike. Instead, I’ve chosen to follow a key person/group for a central development, and will use comments that timestamp generally, rather than minute by minute. If it’s confusing this way, PLEASE tell me. I think that the universal omniscient viewpoint is a cheap copout, and only avoid the second person singular more. ::

As the August sunshine hammered at the canvas awning covering the Surrey bicycle, LaQuinta Dixon’s stomach rumbled unhappily. “Yeah, yeah,” she mumbled aloud to her stomach, “Mister Wexford lives half a mile from the bleeping Japanese garden, and I swear, I couldn’t be rude and NOT share with him, so my lunch became our snack. We’ll get something as soon as we’re less than a mile from the motel.”

Her stomach, unsurprisingly, didn’t seem capable of listening. It rumbled again.

I posted a while ago about how I'd been really getting into pottery this year. That remains true, and shows no signs of stopping. It's just so fun! I still take a 3-hour class once a week at a member-owned studio near me; I think wistfully about spending more time on it too, but for various reasons including but not limited to the busyness of my life in general, that dedicated weekly slot is what works right now.

Back in late February, I spotted a flyer that someone had hung up on the studio bulletin board. It was a call for Boston-area artists to submit art inspired by Octavia Butler's Parable of the Sower, as part of an art show and book circle event co-organized by two local stores, The Local Hand and JustBook-ish.

I'd been meaning to read Parable of the Sower for ages, and the idea of doing a pottery piece inspired by a book seemed really fun -- like a Yuletide prompt, but for physical objects. Also, if your piece was accepted, you got a $500 stipend and 75% of the sale price if your piece sold, and let's be real, that was also extremely motivating.

And motivation was useful! Because the deadline was just over a month away. Pottery has a lot of built-in wait time while things dry, get fired, etc, so on a once-a-week schedule that was going to be pretty tight.

So I read the book, and loved it -- I'd been told that it was brilliant, which it is, and that it's brutal, which it is, but all of the (accurate!) discussions of its brutality hadn't conveyed the fierce pragmatism and focus of how Butler writes hope and community, and that's what I loved most -- and by the next week, I had a plan.

About my piece, and the process, and also noodling about pottery and art -- this got very long )

We just had an unexpected visit: Adrian asked if I'd be willing to either mask or sit in the study with the door closed, so one of her comrades could sit in our air conditioned apartment for a little while. Adrian asked because Simcha is less heat-tolerant than I am, and at least as covid-cautious, so I said yes. It was good to talk to them; I'd met Simcha but only in passing, and Adrian hadn't met them at all, but Adrian talks about them, and Simcha is the person we recently gave our loveseat to.

That was fun, and now they have left and I have taken my mask and clothes off, and am drinking tea. I ended the visit when I started getting uncomfortably warm despite the AC, as well as it being time for me to have tea.

Weak Ass, a Diagnosis

Jun. 22nd, 2025 02:39 pm

As you know, gentle reader, I've been hiking a lot in the great northwoods. What I may not have told you is how much my right foot has been hurting afterward and how much I thought that the problem was an aging hip that might need replacement.

Good news! The physical therapist I saw on Wednesday is pretty sure my hip joints are doing all right. What he diagnosed me with, instead, was a weak ass. Obviously, that's not what he said. What he said was that my butt has a lot of muscles and I got out of the habit of using a number of them regularly. The ones I stopped using were degrading my gait. Basically, certain muscles had atrophied from being so sedentary and I'd developed the old lady waddle.

Phase one of treatment is to wake up my dead ass muscles. So, I have a whole series of five or so exercises to keep me busy. They're easy stretchy excercises, however, three of which I can do lying down, two I can do while sitting, and one I can do while standing. Because I'm married to Shawn Rounds, PT Queen and Project Manager, I suspect I will have no trouble being reminded to do my exercises. At any rate, I see my physical therapist in two weeks to check on my progress.

A couple of funny stories about the appointment.

First, when I did the intake form, they ask a lot of questions that made me realize that a LOT of people who go to PT regularly are in much, much worse shape than I am. So, at one point, in the margins I wrote, "I'm fat, but otherwise healthy!" Jake, my physical therapist, found this deeply charming and told me so.

I then charmed him again when he asked me to lie on my side for one so I could try one of the exercises and I said, "Wait, I should take out some of the things in my pockets." Out of my pockets came: my keys, about a dozen foreign coins, my inhailer, and three cool rocks. I could see him looking at this collection of things wanting to say something, so I explained, "You know the meme that where it says 'the worst thing about being an adult is that no one ever shows you a cool rock anymore'? Well, do you want to see a cool rock?" Jake found this oddly delightful.

Which, frankly, is my best feature. Being odd and delightful.

Today is partly sunny and sweltering. It's 87°F and the heat index is 95°F. :P A beautiful day to stay indoors and write!

I fed the birds. I've seen a small flock of sparrows and house finches, several mourning doves, and a fox squirrel.

I put out water for the birds.

EDIT 6/22/25 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.

EDIT 6/22/25 -- I watered the plants on the new picnic table.

*nervous laughter* I have made a mistake…

In addition to two appointments this week, one of which required about 8 hours of driving, I helped dogsit. E needed to go to an event down in my neck of the woods, but her partner recently got injured. Watching over two dogs alone was going to be an issue, so I got tagged in as backup.

Which is how I ended up running full-tilt through deep, soft beach sand whilst attached to 80 pounds of deranged young dog. I am not a runner. I am fat and have bad knees. I am the strong-man body type, thank you. But by the gods, I said I would help wear this dog out, and I was going to do it or die trying.

I did not die, though I did fall down at one point. Within hours, my muscles were informing me that mistakes had been made. Today, the morning after, I am sore as hell.

Sore muscles aside, I had a lovely time getting to know E’s partner, as we’ve mostly just seen each other in passing before. And the three of us had a nice dinner together and I got to catch up with E. No regrets; just a lot of Tylenol.

Oh, but I did realize something: this was the first time I had reason to run since surgery. I might be sore after the fact, but nothing hurt in the moment. Because I didn’t have ten pounds of ballistic boob attached to me while I was doing it. I could feel the difference in the moment and marveled at it. Even with the best, most restrictive sports bras money can buy, running used to be painful and awkward.

So I’ve once again spent a long weekend exhausting myself worse than the work week could ever hope to. (x_x)

Today I am mostly sitting in front of a fan and watching 11 Amy Rory River. Only just finished Vampires in Venice. Pondering if I shall skip Amy's Choice. Probably should.

This weather is Not Pleasing and my flat's tendency to stay the same temperature for ages isn't lovely this time of year. If I win on the premium bonds I am getting somewhere I can put air con and solar panels in. Blergh.

Also if Sainsburys actually feels like delivering Ribena some time soon that would be lovely.

But today is pretty okay.

And there are many more episodes to enjoy.

Good afternoon! How did your writing session go?
  • It was great!
  • It went well.
  • It was pretty good.
  • Could be better.
  • I didn't get any writing done. (whether life was hectic, taking a break, or writer's block)
  • I thought about writing this week.
Discussion: What writing program/material is your go to when writing fanfiction? It could be for your first draft, jotting down ideas and plot points, or the final version of your fanfic; doesn't matter as long as it was written down.

Pokemon/Burn Notice

It occurred to me that the main characters of Burn Notice can be mapped 1:1 to the main characters of Pokemon:

  • Michael = Ash
  • Fionna = Misty
  • Sam = Brock

And so I made this:
