Hello! You may be here because you saw me talking about Dreamwidth on Tumblr, or from my Dreamwidth tutorials at [community profile] newcomers or [community profile] the_great_tumblr_purge. Or maybe you here via one of the communities I run: [community profile] queerly_beloved, [community profile] moodthemeinayear, or [community profile] summerofthe69.

I mostly post about a combination of real life foibles, whatever projects I'm working on at a given time, and whatever fandom I'm into at the moment (currently The Scum Villain's Self-Saving System, as of April 2025). If you're interested in any of these, feel free to subscribe and stick around! You're welcome to introduce yourself in the comments of this post if you'd like, but feel no obligation; I fully support Lurkers in all of your forms 😉

If you want a quick link to a bunch of Dreamwidth guides, check here at Newcomers or here at The Great Tumblr Purge; my own Tumblr-oriented Dreamwidth guides I'll link below, as well:

[sticky entry] Sticky: Rat Mood Theme

soc_puppet: Dreamsheep, its wool colored black and shot through with five diagonal colored lines (red, yellow, white, blue, and green, from left to right), the design from Dreamwidth user capri0mni's Disability Pride flag. The Dreamwidth logo is in red, yellow, white, blue, and green, echoing the stripes. (Disability Pride)
Want to see all the moods for my Fancy Rats mood theme so far? Click here! This is the official mood theme page for it on Dreamwidth. As of today, August 21st 2024, it's effectively done, with thanks to [community profile] moodthemeinayear! I will post an official download link to the full mood theme sometime in December. Anyone who doesn't want to wait is welcome to download the images individually—which is a lot of work, so I may provide a download link earlier in this post, we'll see.

Edit: My Fancy Rats mood theme is now also an official site-supported Dreamwidth mood theme! That means that anyone can use it, no need to get a paid account! There are a few differences between the official version and my original version, so if you want to see all of the official rats, click here. [/edit]

Want to block the images for any reason? Under this cut tag is a list of all of the image links, so you can just copy-paste them into an ad blocker or whatever. ExpandRat mood theme image links )

And that should be all of them! The exception is if I add more rats as icons, which is possible, but probably not for a little while yet 😅

Okay, I said I'd share the actual fun stuff about my Philosophy 101 teacher in my next post, because he does seem to be actually trying to be a fun guy and bring enjoyment and humor to his classes. He likes to make jokes and pop culture references (most of which are a little dated even to me, who is probably fifteen to twenty years older than most of my classmates), and he does genuinely care if we get good grades, and really doesn't want us to use GenAI to actually write anything for us, even if he is encouraging us to use it as a reference for how to write essays.

Moving on! One of the things he had us do is act out and film a YouTube video about Descartes' "Cogito, ergo sum" moment, and subsequent refutation of global skepticism. It's basically a parody of Bill and Ted, but much shorter and about one particular moment in European philosophy history.

I volunteered to play a minor antagonist, The Disco Kid, because the part has a few song parody lines that actually involve singing, and I figured that most people would prefer to avoid that. I, meanwhile, am not afraid to make that kind of fool of myself on a YouTube video that hardly anyone is likely to ever see. (I probably won't even link it over here, since it credits me with my paperwork name, except maybe under access only. I may share screencaps of me in my totally rad Disco/hippie outfit, though.) And if it somehow actually goes viral, I imagine I'll probably be the breakaway favorite character.

Anyway, aside from the GenAI thing (which I do want to find a way to subtly subvert, aside from just very emphatically shaking my head any time he suggests my classmates use it) and the whole "This is definitely European, Christian philosophy we're learning here" things, it's genuinely a fun class. Not a lot of homework, textbook is effectively some online essays and other ridiculous videos the teacher has made, very generous grading. I should be able to ride it out fine without my head exploding.

I have to rant about my philosophy teacher tomorrow. He seems like a genuinely good guy, I'm enjoying the class, but his opinions on ChatGPT are...

Look, he suggested it as a study aid for our first test, coming up next Thursday. Anyone know if that "Tell me how many times the letter 'X' appears in [word]" trick still works? I'm thinking of emailing him a suggestion of that, and also that he recommend all students who consult ChatGPT save or print off their results. My hope is that, if ChatGPT gives them bad info to study off of, having proof that their incorrect response is because of ChatGPT will result in fewer points lost for the students. (And hopefully, ultimately, the teacher understanding why I keep visibly and emphatically shaking my head whenever he suggests relying on it as a study aid in class, but I'm not holding my breath.)

...Actually, I think that's about all the rant I need right there. Describes my problem succinctly (aside from how he might be a little confused about what "passing the Turing Test" actually means WRT machine intelligence or lack thereof), gets to what I think might be actionable and a possible solution, etc. I might talk about the fun stuff from his class tomorrow, instead.

Currently between classes! I spent the first couple of hours after my morning class studying, and now I'm seeing what I can do to spend the rest of the time before my evening class. If either of the classes were in my hometown, I'd just go home for a nap and some relaxation, but unfortunately they're both in the same city where I work, which is half an hour away by car and seems like a waste to drive. I mean, I could still technically get almost five hours at home between classes? But that's a lot of time and especially gas money that I'd just as soon not spend, for the time being. I may change my mind by the end of the semester, but until then...

I only had one item left to do for this week's evening class (one evening a week): A quiz on the first chapter of our textbook, all multiple choice or true/false, three attempts allowed. I got 90% on the first two tries, and 100% on the last one. So far, so good!

I also figured I'd try and get a little bit ahead for my evening class stuff. I have the time, so why not? Unfortunately, I can't actually tell at the moment if what we're going to be assigned this week is three whole textbook chapters, or just the introduction for those three chapters. I read the entirety of the first of the assigned chapters just in case, then threw in the towel for today; I plan to ask for clarification tonight, since the website I access the (legit free) textbook through marks the to-do item complete once I open just the intro part of the chapter. Our reading for last week had been the opening of the first chapter and all three sub-parts, each of which got checked off as I opened them, so I would say I have reason to be confused!

ANYWAY. Wednesdays aside, I have a morning class Monday through Thursday, after which I usually visit the college library to work on homework for an hour or so. I'm pretty sure this is something I can keep up for the rest of my classes, so I'm cautiously optimistic about keeping my grades up for these last few semesters and actually getting my Associate's degree!

So far, so good ✌

Dear My Parents,

Sometimes when I am making a meal that is more complicated than a sandwich, I want to make it for just me. Especially when I have only bought ingredients with a meal for a single person in mind. Like, I'm usually happy to make something else instead! Just. I'd like to know before I start making a meal for Just Me that it's instead going to be for three people. Possibly so I can start making something else instead.

(I would be willing to accept "Not feeling guilty when saying that I'm only making enough for one" as a compromise.)

Yours,
Someone who really wanted to eat what was initially planned as one hungry person's worth of gyudon last night.

Our local Joann's has five days left before it closes, unless it completely runs out of everything before then.

In related news, guess who has two thumbs and impulse-bought ten yards of fleece featuring sharks spyhopping. I have absolutely no idea what I'm going to do with it, but like. It was only $15. I am very, very, very weak to that kind of deal.

(Note to self: Do something with Avery and Zeek and spyhopping; it would be adorable.)

And There Was Only One Bed, Chapter Four is now available to listen to!

If you liked the fic (or if you haven't gotten to it yet but it seems like something you might like) and listening to stories is a thing you enjoy, go do so! [personal profile] gwogobo did a fantabulous job 💖

Oh yeah...

Today is the final day to vote in the 2025 Summer of the 69 Theme Poll!

There are currently eleven "front runners", with two tied for first place; I'm honestly not planning to vote myself this year, since everything is so close, but I guess we'll see if the poll gets any more votes before tomorrow morning.

If all the ratios stay the same through the end of the poll, more votes or not more votes, I'm going to go ahead and do double themes for the last of the "middle ten". IIRC, the bottom rung of themes last year had a lot more in it than this year currently does, though I'd have to double check.

So yeah! That's how things are over there right now.

I've (finally) made it about half an hour into the final chapter of SVSSS book three and I just want to give Luo Binghe all the (platonic) hugs 😭

Also ZZL. Boy deserves some of his own. Planning to get him laid for Sot69, at least.

Edit: 45 minutes left in the last chapter before the extras. Possibly the exact point where things start looking up again. There's no audio version available for Book 4 that I'm aware of, so I'll have to read said extras silently, but to be honest I'm looking forward to it. Bring on the happy ending, please and thank you!

In better news, today I realized that one of my longest standing plunnies would be a perfect fit for a modern day SVSSS AU: Subversion of the "going undercover as a couple (at a gay bar)" trope. There's a lot of details I have yet to work out, but in the meantime, it's excellent pondering fodder 👌

(Seriously, this plunny has been nibbling at me for more than ten years. I'm so glad it finally has a potential home!)

Edit: I found the post where I talked about the trope before! I should 100% write the fic. But first, I get to must outline... 👀

Got a very mild scolding at work, which RSD promptly blew out of proportion 🙄 Managed to work through it by composing a countdown poem about it.

Though it is rarely anything big or important,
just a small misstep here or there,
still I find myself flinching.
I shy away from
these lingering memories,
like open
wounds.

Needs a title still (initial title was "making a small mistake at work"), but it helped me through things, so. Still good. (Cuz goddamn does emotional disregulation make thinking about small mistakes feel like accidentally poking an infected hangnail or getting lemon juice on a papercut. Like, are you serious. That much from this? Can't we just give it up and heal already?)
soc_puppet: Words "Creative Process" in purple (Creative Process)
I kinda wanna write some poetry, specifically in a format that starts with seven words and goes for seven lines, losing one word with each line. (Is that an officially named/acknowledged format somewhere? If so, what's it called?) But then I started overthinking things and now I feel pretentious while pondering, so.

Time to try and kill the part of me that cringes, I guess. Or at least do fierce battle with it.

Edit: "Harvest"

Thousands of years of agricultural science yields
a new branch grafted safely on
Our pact with the earth
and with each other
Zested and juiced
I taste
lemon

This is not the pretentious one I was pondering writing, for the record.

Tentatively calling this format "countdown poetry" until I learn it has another name already.

Remembered a deadline and took a break from writing another Dreamwidth primer to instead get the 2025 theme poll for [community profile] summerofthe69 finished and posted. There are forty-four possible themes to choose from, and voters also have the ability to decide if the fest should have twenty-three themes this year, instead of the previous standard of thirteen.

I've got two possible plunnies that I'm sitting on for this year; I'm going to try and get them outlined over the next month, and then when theme voting closes on May 15th, I'll see which themes I can shoehorn the stories in to 😜

Even odds that I'll skip posting the voting link around tonight; it's only half an hour until my clock flips over to midnight anyway, so.
soc_puppet: Words "Baseless Opinion" in orange (Baseless Opinion)
I totally get why creeping charlie has a bad rep (and, as of making this post, am zero percent surprised to learn that it's in the mint family), but it is such a pretty plant. Those tiny trumpet-like flowers! The purple edges on the scalloped leaves! The way it perks up in spring alongside dandelions and violets! I have absolutely no objections to it taking over an entire lawn.

Just found out via Tumblr, the governmental website for Covid information is now literal propaganda. No, really. It is a fucking trip to click through and even skim.

This is definitely one of those "laugh so you don't cry" moments, because like. Seriously. What the FUCK.

Me, squinting at a bunch of posts: Okay, that language isn't French, and it's not Spanish, but it has elements of both. Portuguese?

Me again, after another five or so posts in that language: Oh, this one mentions Brasil! Probably Portuguese, then. Maybe it's prime posting time in Brazil, then?

Heaven help me, I have actually been going to bed at a reasonable hour the past few days! The trend seems highly likely to continue tonight, as well...

Anyway, to-do for tomorrow:

  • Go to the grocery store, pick up juice and raspberries (and maybe other veg?)
  • Doctor's appointment
  • Nap!
  • Probably we'll be watching the niblings again (elder nibling discovered a love of raspberries in Florida, so that's why I'm picking those up)

  • I think that should be everything. ...Oh, wait!

  • Make a "sleepy" icon

  • There, that should do the trick.

If anyone would like me to make a tutorial about something Dreamwidth related, or how it compares to Tumblr, I've got request posts up on Newcomers and The Great Tumblr Purge. Also on Dreamwidth Sharing on Tumblr. Leave a comment at one of those places or direct message me, and I'll see what I can do!

Current planned tutorials include cut tags, icons in general, and image uploading/sharing on Dreamwidth.

Absolutely devastating that Tumblr communities don't allow embedded links from Dreamwidth. I include so many of those fuckers in my tutorials, because I want to make things easier for potential Dreamwidth users! Unfortunately, when I go to copy-paste one of the tutorials I'm writing for [community profile] newcomers over to Dreamwidth Sharing on Tumblr, that means I have to manually remove all hyperlinks and either enter a Tumblr substitute (or the occasional non-Dreamwidth substitute), or include a plain text version of the link after the text I would normally embed the link in. Very frustrating, especially when Tumblr informs me that I missed a link, and therefore cannot post the entry to the community.
