While I'm at it, Barbie as the Princess and the Pauper is kinda hilarious? Like, naturally the narrative makes a huge deal of Princess Annalise and commoner Erika not only looking exactly the same except for hair color, the writer went to the trouble of even having them being born at almost the exact same time and on the same day. Which would be pretty remarkable, if just about every other Barbie movie I've seen so far didn't have a terrible case of Same Face, with many of the main female characters also looking Exactly Like Barbie Except For the Hair, and also all the main dude characters closely resembling each other. This includes both love interests in this film, who might have pulled a Prince and Pauper on their own if Barbie and her lookalike had been unavailable. Like, the premise is that it's supposed to be incredibly remarkable how similar Princess Annalise and Erika look, when it's more unusual for main characters not to closely resemble each other in a Barbie movie.

(That said, the plot for this one was pretty good. Absolute minimal embarrassment squick shenanigans with cute romance subplots, a thorough condemnation of indentured servitude, and Princess Annalise saving the kingdom through being a science geek.)

Still making my way gradually through Barbie movies. I've managed to get over whatever snobbery was holding me back from the early stuff, and have started watching in release order, as well.

Anyway, I just finished Barbe and the Magic of Pegasus, and, well.

Cloud Queen: To make the McGuffin that will save your kingdom, you will need to find a measure of courage, a gem of ice lit by hope's eternal flame, and a ring of love.

Barbe Princess Annika: Hey, that's only three things! This'll be easy!

Me: ...😐

(This one and one other so far have bloopers at the end, like Pixar used to do (but stopped for some reason). Also, just so I'm sure, I'm guessing there's a popular telling of Rapunzel that calls the witch Gothel and has the title character interested in painting? One that's been around considerably before Tangled? 'Cuz right now I'm about fifty-fifty for both Barbe as Rapunzel (2002) and Tangled (2010) drawing from that vs Disney having slightly more motivation than you might think for changing their original Mother Gothel design to the horrible antisemitic caricature she is today. (Understandable is not excusable, of course; they still should've workshopped a non-horrible design.) Just... two similarities are a coincidence, three's a pattern and all that...)

A Fairy Secret is officially my new favorite Barbie movie. Great script, really interesting worldbuilding ("I'm a shoe fairy! My magic is only as powerful as my shoes are fabulous!"), rivals-to-friends storyline with two of the main characters, portal fantasy with the door left open for continuations... delightful.

Oh, and also bi-pan solidarity action. I'm prepared to give it as much as even odds of not being accidental.

With the Barbie Official playlist deleted from YouTube, I went to a different source and decided to try watching Barbie movies more from the beginning. Mistake! Mattel started making them in 2001, and the computer animation is very much of its time. I managed to get through Fairytopia okay, buuuut am still pretending that the end wasn't as ablist as I predicted it would be less than five minutes into the film. I got fifteen minutes into the direct sequel, Fairytopia: Mermaidia, when the most godawful uncanny valley human-faced sea turtle was introduced. I just... why? Animals do not need to look like humans to be cute!

I think I'm going to keep watching this one for now, though if it gets too unbearable, I have permission from myself to skip to whatever the next movie that catches my interest is. I know they have a fairly radical change in style by 2011, at least, by which time the animation improves pretty drastically.

Edit: The role of Humanface Turtle turned out to be mercifully brief. On to Fairytopia 3!

Finally getting around to watching Barbie movies (after many recommendations). So far I've seen Princess Charm School and about half of Princess Power.

Here's my quick summary of Princess Charm School:

Blaire (played by Barbie) wins a lottery to get civilian entrance to the aforementioned charm school to be some sort of royal lady-in-waiting type person. She's got a Chloe-type rival who just dislikes her with a parent who is actually out to boot Blaire from the school. Also, Blaire is adopted, and there are rumors that at least one member of the previous royal family, who Evil Mom took over from, may have survived the car crash they were all in seventeen years ago...! Also there are personal assistant fairies and a magic crown that glows when placed on the head of the true heir to the throne, though it's not been seen in ages. Oh, also, every student gets their own personal fairy assistant.

So far, Princess Power has been an even more wild ride. Here's my observations so far: Princess Power! )

More as I watch and feel the desperate need to comment! Done!
