Summary: Akako likes giving chocolate for the wrong reasons
Notes: Yes, I know it's entirely the wrong time of year for a Valentines Day fic. I don't care.
Fic: Obligation Chocolate
When Akako was young, she would give chocolate to everyone on Valentine's Day. She liked the feeling she got when she gave it to people, and she liked getting return chocolates on White Day (though she loathed to give it herself). She had enough money that it didn't even dent her savings to pass out chocolate to the whole class.
When Akako was in seventh grade, she discovered boys. Boys fell easily for her looks and charm, would do anything to have her glance in their direction, and didn't care if she walked all over them. For the most part Akako had the male population wrapped around her little finger--especially around major holidays. Those years she only gave chocolate to boys, and only the ones who asked for it. She loved how it felt when they had to ask her for it, how she would get chocolate on White Day even from people she hadn't given any to, how they saw her as some sort of untouchable goddess. As time passed, her influence only got stronger.
In tenth grade, Akako decided that being liked wasn't enough--she wanted to be liked better than anyone else. When Valentine's Day rolled around she had chocolate ready at her fingertips. She handed it out to any boy who wanted some, but only on the condition that he rid himself of any other chocolate he recieved. The male population was more than happy to comply, trampling the feelings of any other female that looked in their direction. All except for one: Kuroba Kaito.
Akako was facinated. Someone had rejected her? Someone could reject her, with her charms and beauty, her power and influence? She couldn't seem to wrap her mind around the concept. For the next six months, she did everything in her power to make Kaito fall for her.
Around September, Kaito's best friend Aoko approached her. "I know you like Kaito," she said, "but I want you to stop whatever it is you're doing to him."
Akako scoffed. "I don't think that's any of your business."
"Maybe not," Aoko replied, looking past Akako to her best friend. "But I'd like it if you did anyway. It's hard to tell sometimes, but it's hurting him. So if you would please consider it, I would appreciate it very much."
Akako stared at her, stunned into silence. She was hurting Kaito? She hardly noticed when Aoko went to her own seat, and finished class only half-aware. For the first time in many years, Akako considered her actions and was ashamed.
That year Akako didn't give out chocolate to anyone on Valentine's Day. She bought the materials as usual, but they sat unused on her counter for a month.
In March, Akako started picking up the pieces of her life. She backed off of Kaito and stopped making advances on the male population in general. Soon, Aoko invited her to eat lunch with her and Keiko. Kaito would join them frequently and Akako began to get to know him as Kaito rather than just something she couldn't have.
When Valentine's Day rolled around again Akako got out her chocolate-making supplies. That year she handed out chocolate to Aoko, Keiko and Kaito. Aoko smiled genuinely at her and gave Akako some chocolate of her own.
She only gave chocolate to one other person--though some would say it wasn't another person at all. The Kaitou Kid had another Valentine's Day heist (Kaito had never been very good at remembering holidays, Akako thought wryly) and she managed to catch up to him as he was making his way across the city after his performance. He circled his hang-glider when she called his name from a rooftop.
"I have something for you," she told him, holding out the chocolate box.
Kid's hat brim tilted downward. "Can I trust you?"
Akako blushed ashamedly. "You don't have to take it," she told him. "I just wanted to say... sorry, I guess. And I still like you, even if you like someone else." She continued to hold out the chocolate and swallowed against apprehension when the Kid landed on the roof, his glider folding up with a snap. He strode over to her and lifted the box from her hands, smiling enigmatically.
"I told you that you had a beautiful heart in there," he said. He leaned in close and Akako's breath caught in her throat when his lips brushed her cheek. "Good night, Miss," he murmured.
Akako raised her hand to feel where he had kissed her, almost afraid to believe it. A smile curled on her lips as she watched the Kid glide away again.

Because Summercloud mentioned a while back that there weren't enough Akako fics and I decided to do something about it. And because I wanted to see if I could make Kid and Akako work. I think I did okay--not spectacular, but okay.
Anyway, concrit is love ♥
