Job Shenanigans
Aug. 27th, 2020 07:40 pmFor the past two-ish weeks (plus Derecho Week), I've been working at a health monitoring station for the local branch of the community college the hotel I work for is connected to. It basically amounts to sitting at a table and asking whoever approaches if they've had any Covid symptoms, then taking their temperature with a handheld temp checking gun thing; if their temps are under a certain level, they can go inside, while if their temps are over, I ask them to wait a few minutes and we'll try again. (If their temps are still too high after a third check, I ask for their contact information (voluntary) so I can pass it along to whoever they want to talk to, and send them away. I had to do that for the first time today.)
Anyway, classes are starting next week, and since we don't have enough people to effectively cover the health stations with the expected influx of students, the health stations were being shut down. I was asked if I wanted to be a greeter to students instead; basically make sure they're all wearing masks and social distancing, while also offering directions to classrooms. I found out about this changeover on Monday/Tuesday, sent my acceptance yesterday evening (Wednesday), and got a chance to ask a few clarifying questions about the job today (Thursday) around noon. The greeter job was supposed to last about two weeks, during which I figured I'd keep my options open for if the college had any other jobs they needed filling, and figured I'd look into local bakery jobs if not.
Then, just as I was leaving today, I found out that it was just decided that all in-person classes are going to be starting with two weeks mandatory online-only class time, because Covid. I think this means that I'll be doing temp checking another two weeks now, with the greeter job another two weeks after that, but I'm planning to check when I go in tomorrow to find out for sure 😅
(Edit: Oh, right! My boss(? Hierarchy is confusing right now...) saw me crocheting flying pigs today and bought one! I've got another person who wants to buy one from me tomorrow, as well. I am tentatively intrigued by this series of events...)
