The closest adoptable rats to me, as according to Petfinder.com, are in German Valley, Illinois, followed closely by some in Madison, Wisconsin (who are blue and adorable alrsejlfkjd ♥_♥). I have no idea if either of these shelters are willing to deliver or to meet halfway. Having done some digging, there's also a lone male rat (1yr old) available in Dubuque, which is closer than either of these. I also still need to call the CR PetCo, since the Coralville PetCo lady said they might have rats up for adoption there (and really, the Coralville PetCo seems to be treating its available pets better than certain other stores I could name). I haven't found any adverts for rats for sale in the classified ads yet, and I'm reluctant to check the board at PetLand, what with... various things.
I. Kinda wanna get the lonely white rat in Dubuque regardless, but I still want to get at least two younger rats, since I heard that older intact male rats are more likely to accept younger male rats, and also that it's helpful to have at least two if they're young so they can beat up on each other and not piss off the older guy. Though, oh God, where would I get a third cage for quarantine? Oh wait, there was that one on sale at PetCo, and it's Black Friday now to boot...)
Pat says I should think about getting three rats anyway, so that way I won't have to be quite so rushed when the inevitable happens and I lose one, but I think we were both thinking I'd just be getting younger rats when she suggested this.
BUT MY HEART HAS TOTALLY GONE OUT TO THE LONELY WHITE RAT, GUYS, I'M SERIOUS. I. I need to think about it.
IN OTHER NEWS, our apartment's new fridge is not so much of the working! GASP. This is pretty spectacular, considering we've had it for less than a month after the old one kicked the bucket :/ Given that the AC in our apartment is also in pretty bad shape, I'm beginning to wonder if there isn't just some sort of curse on cooling devices in this place.
Regardless, we need a place we can keep the milk where it won't turn into curds and whey, or possibly yogurt.
Edit: GODAMMIT, CONAN, WHY DO YOU INTERPRET WHITE MEDICAL TAPE ON MY FINGER AS SOMETHING THAT MUST BE ATTACKED. Though I assume I can't blame my roommate and his anti-band-aide prejudice ("They cost more" my ass - sometimes you shell out for the important stuff), given that Conan would probably be prone to attacking those as well; I probably would've been better not to have cut my finger horribly in the first place. Rassa-frassa scissors -_-#

Date: 2008-11-28 09:08 pm (UTC)But if you're not able to get the ones listed on petfinder- try craigslist for your local city and search in the pets section. We got a beautiful and sweet rabbit complete with her cage and supplies for free off Craigslist since her owner was moving away to college.

Date: 2008-11-28 10:30 pm (UTC)Just glanced through; thus far, the thing that looks the closest is the person offering "large male feeder rats" for five dollars each. Which... I know some awesome rats can come out of feeder tanks, but I'm still apprehensive? There's the age issue to worry about, since large usually means older in my experience, among other things...
