Mostly griffin ramblings
Apr. 20th, 2012 11:50 pmHelp me out here: For a griffin that's part tiger instead of part lion, should it have gold eyes (circular pupil) or green eyes (slit pupil)? Those are the only choices - well, the only ones I'd use for standard tiger type, anyhow. Blue is obviously what I'd go for with a white tiger-griffin, but I really can't decide for the orange tiger one.
Ooo, now I wanna make a cheetah one, too. It'd be a challenge to place all the spots in a way that I like, but I do love me a good challenge. Definitely gold eyes for a cheetah-griffin, though the green would go much better with the color of yellow I'm contemplating for it.
Incidentally, are they still called "griffins" when they're not part lion but still part cat? And if I go the other way, switch the birds around, and it's part pigeon or something: still griffins?
...I might actually go part pigeon, if only because I have a strange affection for them. But really, I'm mostly thinking other bird patterns taking over the coloring, since I already did that cat-wise. A pheasant would be nice, or any number of parrots; I'll bet I could pull off a scarlet macaw spectacularly. A peacock would be fabulous, especially if I went for Red Heart Shimmer yarn (it has a same-color sparkle and comes in approximately the right colors), though I'd probably want to go for Vanna's Glamor for the bronze-ish feathers right above the tail.
God, pulling off that tail would be something else, too; it'd probably be a good idea to alter the pattern for any more bird-based griffins, though it gets me wondering: should I compensate for stealing the lion tail by switching out the bird legs for a full set of lion legs? Still, it'd be a shame to miss some of those lovely scaly-part color options. Definitely gonna wanna switch the ears out for a crest, though - even if I make a horned owl griffin or a prairie chicken griffin (not remotely likely, the latter), I'd want to change the shape up, make it more tufty and rounded than flat.
I'd probably something like the mascot bird has for most of the bird griffins, just to keep the shape of the head visually interesting. (I don't find this a problem with actual birds, but plush bird mascots and griffins are another matter.) Unless it's something that already has a crest, which brings me right back around to peacocks, which, wow, doozie of a crest-thing there. Maybe pipecleaners, shave 'em down?
As an aside, I probably wouldn't end up making a peahen-griffin unless it's by request; sorry, ladies, you/we got the short end of the stick visually in the bird department, and I'm thinking of things with flair.
...Oh man, wouldn't a buzzard-griffin be seriously creepy in the best way? I'd probably downsize the head, do it all in red; keep the lion tail (also in red), but switch to slip stitch instead of the dc 6 rounds in the standard pattern so it looks considerably more ratlike. (To my boys: I love you dearly, but your tails make you unpopular with lots of people.) Ooo, maybe something just off-white for the scaly bits, to suggest bone? This is one where I definitely don't need an elaborate crest, though maybe little flappy skin-ears would work. Though actually, that could help budge the cuteness factor back in the "more" direction; the question here is, do I want to go with cute for a buzzard-griffin?
And that's all provided I don't get horribly burnt out on griffins, or just start worrying that they're all I make *cough*EuropeanDragons*cough*. Maybe I could limit myself to one or two a month, see where that takes me? Ooo, I could do a griffin-of-the-month thing! Buzzard-griffin would be perfect for October! 8D ...Actually, I really like the sound of that; I may just have to do it.
So: tiger-griffin is now my "official" griffin-of-the-month for May. It is decided. Past that (and buzzard-griffin), my plans are wide open.
In other news, I am seriously tempted to try my hand (or voice, as it were) at podficcing. I've been listening to a lot of them and have become thoroughly addicted, though I am balancing them out with the odd original novel or two. I really, really don't need another hobby, but, well, tell that to the two computer mics I picked up today. At least they were really cheap? And I keep reading fics and wondering, "Why isn't this a podfic so I can experience it while crocheting!" S-sigh. Maybe I'll sign up for the next track of
remopodmo; that'll at least help me put it off for a little while.

Date: 2012-04-23 02:39 pm (UTC)I think I'd go for the green eyes on your tiger-type. Mmm, green kitty eyes. :3
Yep, still a griffin even if you change the bits up. (My personal favorite: lynx/northern goshawk. Grey grey grey and not really flashy, but I have an OC with that combination, so.)
Scarlet macaw or peacock would be epic sauce. :D

Date: 2012-04-23 04:57 pm (UTC)Okay, green eyes for tiger-griffin. Now I just need to decide if I want it to have white bits and, if so, where to put them...
Oh, good; I was worried I'd have to learn a whole slew of new names, and then hardly anyone would recognize/appreciate them anyway. (Ooo, I could totally emphasize the ear-tufts with that combo! I mean, it'd just be an extra stitch or two at the tips, but still.)
I think I'm going to make the scarlet macaw my June griffin :3 Not sure about the peacock yet; I kinda wanna make it in the bigger size, at least in part to better justify the purchase of all that extra yarn ^^a But that would practically make it a two month griffin, I'm thinking. We will see, I guess!
