Mom followed me to school today to take pictures of me in my uniform and at work. We're practicing knife skills this week, and I am a perfectionist to the point of ridiculosity, which makes slicing potatoes take a while to say the least. I'm planning to practice more at home with fruits and veg and such, because practice is good and I need it :/
Tonight I'm going with a peach, since I'm planning to make applesauce pancakes and the only applesauce we have is peach-mango flavored and we have peaches in the fridge. I figure, brunoise it up, microwave it with some honey, maybe a little water, and then spread the results over the pancakes. Well, I think it'll work, at any rate. If not, I'll still have gotten more practice in. I should probably start with a small amount, see how that turns out, then go for the rest of the peach if it works. Worse comes to worst, I'll just have brunoised peaches on the side. Omnomnom.
I have become incredibly enamored with ear wraps of late. I keep staring at pictures on Etsy and reminding myself that, no, I don't have room in my budget for this, not even for the ultra cheap ones; I'm trying to save up for a 3DS so I can get one of the next Pokémon games when they come out.
I totally can't help it if they're the jewelry of my heart, though. Considering I already have wire, though, and wireworking tools, not to mention beads, I could probably manage to put together some of my own. I'll figure out a way to make it work. ...Eventually. When I'm not busy crocheting and/or writing (which I still only plan to get to next month).
Speaking of crochet, I've been working on getting my griffin pattern ready to go out the door. My goal is to get it out by the end of the month, but right now I'm hemming and hawing over the forelegs. My current design works, and it looks good, but it's also probably more complicated than it needs to be and difficult to explain to boot. I might change it out for something else, but I'd also need to make an alternate set of legs to take pictures of for that to work. Well, I am making a new seal-point griffin for how-to pics anyhow, I may as well give it a shot. I can probably use the claws from the mascot bird in the front, which just leaves the rear claw in question. Something to think about, at least.

Date: 2013-01-30 04:45 pm (UTC)I saw! @_@ That looks fiendishly difficult with just a knife. Someone gave me a cutter that makes cubes if you've put the right size slice of something in it, but I've never managed to get them even with a knife. And peaches are squashy, too. *boggle*
Huzzah!
I would be particularly fond of a grey griffin with black forefeet and red eyes. :D
I'd like to know where you like ear cuffs to sit, and what you'd want them to look like. If you want chain drops, if you want a stud or hoop earring incorporated, how many and where... that sort of thing! Alternately, I am happy to work off of pictures of your favorites and make something similar (but not identical).
I've worn both cuffs that sit around the narrow part of the ear halfway up the outside edge and cuffs that sit around the entire ear like a glasses' earpiece (to link to someone else's stuff, this or that respectively, or things that flare out from behind the ear) or sit higher or lower or... There's options. XD

Date: 2013-01-30 06:21 pm (UTC)The peach I used ended up being a bit on the underripe side, which made cutting a bit easier, I guess. More difficult to get the flesh off the pit, though, sigh.
Ooo, sounds pretty! Do you want the beak to be black as well? And how about the fleshy bit above the beak, would you like that pink or a different color? Also, dark gray or light gray?
I'd prefer something that wraps around the back of the ear, like in your second link. Some designs I like: one, two, three.
I also like the sort that just wraps around the back with minimal stuff in the front, like this.
I tend to be a heavy sweater, so I'm guessing copper isn't the best idea in the world? You're the metalsmith, though, so I'll follow your lead on that. I would like one for each ear, but they don't have to match exactly; one can be fancier than the other or wev, though I would like the same general shape. If you could find a way to incorporate a bit of that opal I sent you, that would be amazing-tastic, but I understand if that's a little much. [/long-winded]

Date: 2013-01-30 06:55 pm (UTC)Thanks for the scans and good luck with the snow. We've had some too, but it's the sort of lovely weather that results in Convenient Snow, that does not stay on roads but does stay beside them. That does mean Inconvenient Ice, however...
A black beak and grey or pink cere would be fantastic. :D I prefer dark greys to lights, but really I just like the entire range of them.
Ooh, I haven't made elf-ears but I have wanted to try them.
I may do a trial pair first, then tackle yours, if that's OK - it extends the time somewhat but means I'm not doing something silly on your pair. I can definitely incorporate some opals - I've started cutting out the larger ones that you sent me, and they're beautiful stones! I've been trying to design something with them as a thank-you, so working them in here is perfect.
As a side note, several people at the club have remarked on the opals, and have found similar thrift-store treasures but never tried cutting them. I think we've started something.
Do you like the stones better on the tips or lobes? Or one of each?
Copper does corrode and stain skin if it gets salt on it, so I'll avoid copper. (Also it is heavy as all get-out, which makes it hard to wear for earrings.) Brass may work if I seal it; either brass or sterling will tarnish over time but neither one is hard to clean, I'll just have to design them so they can be wiped down with a polishing cloth as opals won't stand for any sort of machine cleaning.

Date: 2013-01-30 11:06 pm (UTC)We are snow ALL OVER right now, argh. To the point where class was canceled today :/ I don't like shoveling (though that probably has something to do with me being WAY out of shape) T-T
Okay, these images should print out to be the right size. If not, I can probably scale them again. The dark blue outline is the body of the wings and the light blue part is what I folded over the wire. Though I imagine you'll probably want to make them some shade of red? ;) Pattern zip: here.
Black beak with gray or pink cere, got it :3b (Yay, vocabulary!)
Perfect! I love giving people an excuse to try things they've wanted.
That's fine; I need to order some eyes in the right size/color for you anyhow. I'm totes looking forward to seeing how the opals turn out!
Ohohohoho, excellent >3
Hmm; the tips, probably, though lobes if it's the minimal ones.

Date: 2013-01-31 04:23 pm (UTC)Thanks for the pattern; I will grab it when I am not at work.
I will post pics as I work these up. :3 Thank you!
