soc_puppet: Words "Creative Process" in purple (Creative Process)

It's that time again: When I share pics of the cool things I've crocheted :Db

I'm going to be a little bit lazy today. Photobucket is being a butt, so for my two latest griffins, I'm just going to link to their Etsy listings instead. Waaaaay less html involved, too. I'd worry about looking like I'm just trying to sell my art, but I'm even too lazy for that. Er, go me?

Brown griffin.

AKA "Godric". That's always what I call my brown griffins in my head. I keep meaning to crochet them little red-and-gold scarves to wear, too. *dork* This one is a little lighter in color than some of my brown griffins in the past, but that's not a bad thing. I like his ear placement a little better than my previous brown griffin as well.

White griffin.

I really like the coloring on this one. In the past, I've always made my white griffins with yellow beak-and-talons and brown eyes; it was mostly force of habit that I did it after the first one (this was the coloring on my prototype). I think the gray beak-and-talons and blue eyes really look good, though. Plus it sorta-matches my Winter Storm Dragon :3b (You may need to scroll down to see it.) Since I finished the winter storm dragon during winter storm draco, which is how it got its name, I'm thinking of nicknaming this griffin my Polar Vortex Griffin ;) Maybe I'll offer a discount if someone wants to buy them as a set.

Yoshi, from the Super Mario Brothers franchise. Here's the story:

One of my coworkers (who at the time was also my Professional Production (read as: unpaid internship) teacher) was expecting a granddaughter. (Or, well, the baby has the parts typically associated with cisgirls, so that's what they were going with.) Her son-in-law was having a minor heteronormative fit over potentially not being able to bond with the baby over manly things. My coworker had seen and previously purchased some of my crochet work, and told him she would commission me to make a Yoshi plush for the baby. It took me a while, what with the whole "school full time and working part time" thing I had going on, but I did manage to finish the Yoshi plush on time for my coworker to take it to her family at Christmas.

I'm inordinately pleased with how Yoshi turned out. I'm still amazed at how well the shapes that make up his body turned out. His arms were basically cloned from Casey von Salamancer (scroll down to the yellow thing), and his legs and shoes were pretty straightforward, but his main body, his head, and his eyepiece all have more complex shaping going on. His head is like a sphere with a hemisphere tacked flat-side-down on the back, but it's one piece, which really cut down on the sewing. His body is vaguely like a banana, but more controlled; virtually all of the increases and decreases were made on the lower half of his body, so his back transitions more smoothly into his tail. Then, his neck has a natural curve to it, between using sc for the back and decreasing on the front. It was really interesting to figure out how to make all of that work and to work out the shape based on what I know of stitch placement. I'm very pleased with it.

I still need to post his pattern (and half a dozen others at least) at [personal profile] hooked_on_anime; at least I remembered to get a scan of the cutouts I made for his felt pieces, or I wouldn't even dare. (And then I'd still get people asking me to post the pattern, and I'd have to explain that I didn't keep the paper patterns for the felt pieces, and I could try to remake them but I wasn't planning to make another Yoshi in the near future, how soon did they need it? And so on.)

Bonus cute: My coworker's grandbaby was born safely and healthy, and my coworker brought me back a pic of her with Yoshi, with permission to use it to promote the pattern/my work in general. Thank you, coworker!

It's brachiosaurus now, right? Brontosaurus was the one with the wrong head on it, yes? (I did mention being lazy; this officially includes "too lazy to check which is right on Wikipedia".)

Story behind this one:

I was actually gearing up to make something to put on my Etsy shop, after finishing Yoshi and way more corn than I like to think about (I still have at least a dozen ears to make before the last of my corn-related obligations are fulfilled), when Dad approached me. He wanted to know how much it would cost to get a dinosaur by noon that Sunday. Apparently, my baby cousin (first cousin, once removed) was turning two, and her birthday party was themed "cake vs. dinosaur", and Dad wanted something to go with the theme. I said sure and quoted him a price, then got to work pretty much straight away.

I went with light yellow because it's a nice neutral color. The body is a cross between Yoshi's and my flying pig's. (Yoshi's pattern was already coming in handy!) I wanted to put pink felt spots on its hide, but Dad talked me out of it. I didn't really have a good shade of pink for it anyway, so I suppose it's for the best. I am sad I didn't manage to find my white fabric paint to add glints to the eyes, though. I feel like that adds a bit more life to them.

I've had daydreams for a while of putting together a set of dinosaur patterns, so I'm grateful for the opportunity to get a start on it. And I really do like the simplicity of the design as well. It's nice and straightforward, easy to understand visually. Plus it's cuddly; perfect for little kids :)

I do have access to a pic of my baby cousin cuddling the dino and being in turn cuddled by her mom, but I haven't asked for permission to use it yet, so I'm afraid y'all miss out on that. Still, the dino itself is pretty cute, no?

And that's it, aside from a couple of cat toys I don't have pics of yet.

Current crafty projects:
* Another Sterek inna bottle, for my WPCP winner; I'll go into more detail about that later
* Winged piglets as donation boost incentive for the upcoming Quire fundraiser; I've got a good seven piglets just waiting for wings, and one already flight-ready
* A teal sparkly dragon that I'm hoping to make aquatic-themed
* ???
* Profit Wait no, that's for numbered lists. Never mind! (Not that I'd complain, of course :P)

It could be a Brachiosaurus; that's a real species. However, The Thing That Was (Or Rather, Wasn't) Brontosaurus is properly named Apatosaurus.

Hahahahaa.. ship in a bottle! :D

Oh my god, you're clever. A friend of mine runs crochet classes and we had a Amigurumi session just with friends and I just... I can't do it. I know it's bad to give up on something just when you start, but I couldn't even get which direction I was going or what I needed to be doing or how to identify the different bits and... everyone else got it. I think my brain just balks at craft of any kind. I'm going to try felting but I'm expecting it to be about as disastrous. :)

Awww... thank you so much, that's so kind of you!

I'm actually really interested in leather working and I just have to get around to actually starting to do stuff. I keep buying books and I did a (only somewhat helpful) course but I just have to find a spare few hours to start messing around.

Much hobby. No time. :(

I know - I multitask when I'm watching stuff, especially if I'm ploughing through a series on DVD (like Criminal Minds or something) but usually it's being on the computer also. I need to actually multi-task not with TV/computer but TV/stuff or stuff/computer so I get a break from a screen of some sort!

Podfic I use on my commute - it can be a 2 hour (or more) round trip daily for me getting to work - it never seems quite so long when I'm listening to fic. I think I was listening to something once that was about 8 hours of fic and I actually started looking forward to getting in the car so I could get back to it~! :D

How about "sauropod pattern?" Gets the "this is a long-necked dinosaur" across nicely without having to say it in so many words. :)

Besides, sauropods are awesome.

Also, that Yoshi. SO CUTE.

The grey points really look good on that white griffin! Reminds me of a white cockatoo.
