Miraculous Kagami Opinion

Not that Dragon!Kagami isn't awesome, and definitely not that Ryuuko's costume isn't badass, but if it were up to me?

Skip the Chinese Zodiac kwami, give Kagami another original one.

Kwami: Humm, a hummingbird. (I thought about Flitt, but I don't want D*sney to sue my ass.) Jewel tone colors. Weapon is a sword, inspired by its beak. Grants the power to move Fuck-That's-Fast for a short burst of time. Not sure about its Miraculous yet, but probably something with enamel? No idea what Hummingbird!Kagami would be called, but we can workshop that.

Point being: If we're going to lean into something, I think it'd be more fun to lean into how she's a fencer (see especially: George Takei, and how he got into fencing), rather than (further) reinforcing the Dragon Lady stereotype.

Obvious name choices are Hachidori and Hachisuzume but honestly poking at this list of things spelled with 'suzume' I'd want to play on "Swallows and sparrows can't understand the aspirations of phoenixes and swans"?

Having now caught up with that WIP: LOL 😜 I'm willing to file it under "great minds think alike", yes?

Looking up types of hummingbirds on Wikipedia tells me there's sub-species(?) called Sabrewing, which is what I'm currently leaning towards, especially if it's pronounced saber-wing rather than sah-brewing.

those all seem to be South/Central America, but that's probs not a major problem

(and it's almost got to be saber-wing, like, why would 'brewing' have anything to do with hummingbird etymology, esp when the remainder of the word does not make independent sense)

Apparently hummingbirds are native to the Americas (and probably not found elsewhere). The strongest cultural tie Wikipedia lists is to the Aztecs, so as long as I stay away from that symbolism, I think I should be good to go. (I don't think I can avoid the whole "warriors/weapons users" connotations, but that seems like a non-issue as compared to, like, gods and religion and stuff.)

(Yup, pretty sure I've got the pronunciation/interpretation right, the spelling was just weird to me. Which, as a native English speaker, is not unusual. Apparently it's from a Greek root meaning crooked/broken? But if sword-sabers share the same root, then I'm golden.)
