In other news, I'm finally getting some work done on a creative project I've been planning for a while: Ocean in a Jar. It starts with a large, clear plastic jar (cylindrical for preference); add in one crocheted mermaid, two to four crocheted sea creatures (dolphin, stingray, octopus, maybe turtle?), and an ocean play mat (two fat quarters sewn back-to-back (corners rounded off, lace around the edges), to look like a little patch of ocean/water, so the mermaid and friends are never stuck on dry land). Optional: Glue some sandy-colored fabric to the top/outside of the jar lid to make a little island.

Mermaid and two of a planned three sea creatures are finished; the jar still needs to be rinsed out and attacked with Goo Gone, and then I can make the lid an island; the play mat is cut and pinned together and just needs to be sewn. Once it's done, the plan is to donate it to a local worker justice group for their ten year anniversary silent auction fundraiser thing. I hope it does well!

Thank you! It's been a plan of mine for... gosh, nearly a year now? Longer? The plan started out with glass jars, though, and while I do have some that are large enough, I did eventually come to my senses: Maybe it wouldn't be a good idea to give kids a play kit that is kept in large, heavy glass jars.

Haha, in retrospect, a plastic jar is probably the better choice! I was thinking glass, too, but now I can see where that might not be great for little kids!

The glass jars I have of that size look incredible, though, and I wish I had a different project for them. Maybe I can get into terrariums... Kinda hilarious that one of them used to hold a truly obscene amount of olives, but the plastic jar used to hold dog treats, so 😂

Right? Glass jars are wonderful, but they do get very heavy, especially at a size large enough to hold all the stuff. (And yeah, durability has to be taken into consideration.)

Terrariums can be very pretty!

Olives, dog treats... it's good to reuse! I have pasta jars and jam jars that either get used as drinking glasses or to root plants in, lol.

The jar sounds really cool :D I love that kind of projects. My mother does something with jars as well, with plants and little random toys and anime figures she found from stuff I left behind when I moved out yonks ago and didn't look at in decades, haha. They're fun to see.

You might like these as well, then! (I have a full spice rack set of them, of which one third are regrettably themed after the Harry Potter houses, and I have no idea what to do with it. Can I morally sell it? To whom? What would I do with the money? I don't just want to throw it away, either, but I've literally painted image keys onto the rack itself. Do I need to wait until the transphobic author dies or somehow grows a conscience and starts seeing trans people as people? These are the questions I'm stuck asking myself...)

That's a tough one about what to do with them, though... I've heard of auctions (or just selling) for themed items like these, with the proceeds going to organisations that support trans people? Maybe an option, at some stage.

I had plans to keep going with those alchemical ingredients, and then got distracted/side-tracked. Which kinda stinks, because A) They were fun, and B) I still can't stop buying shaped glitter. I've mostly managed to stop buying tiny glass bottles, but, well...

I think I'll keep that in mind. It's a thorny issue to be sure.
