Finally got around to posting this year's wishlist on holiday_wishes!


Managed to finish up the gifts I was making for my niblings: Two book-pillows! One of Elder Nibling's parents shared in early November that said nibling had fallen asleep on a book, and I decided then and there to make something softer for falling asleep on 😆 I've got a bunch of half-inch craft foam laying around for a project that never really went anywhere, so I repurposed it for this project. I cut a foam cover, and four foam pages. I then cut and sewed enough fabric for what was basically a pillow sham with external lips for the foam cover, and sleeves for all four pages out of a different pattern; with the sleeves done, I attached them to the cover with a Japanese book-binding technique, and everything was done! (...This is the short version, with all the mistakes edited out.) Elder Nibling's book-pillow was dinosaur themed, because dinosaurs, while Younger Nibling's book-pillow was ocean themed, because their name is also nautical in nature.

Upon seeing the book-pillows, SIL insisted again that I need to enter something in the state fair. Luckily, I actually wrote down the steps for the book-pillows, making it slightly more plausible. It helps that I've also got an idea for another one with actual book content in it. (There's some fabric that's in rainbow with the ASL alphabet on it at Joann's that I really love, and I think I can get Shel Silverstein's ASL-and-drawings-and-written-phrases poem transcribed onto a good number of pages for just such a project...)

Thanks! I treated myself to the required fabric yesterday, because I'm not sure it'll always be around, and better safe than sorry!

I do have a quibble with the Mandalorian crochet pattern set; first, I think my family has forgotten my legitimately unreasonable grudge against Star Wars (I first watched the Original Trilogy when I was too young to understand what was going on and therefore hated it, though I thawed a good bit towards the franchise before Disney bought it, and now I have no idea what to feel), and second, I don't think they noticed or possibly care that I almost never use anyone else's patterns 😅 They saw it and thought of me, though (it's geeky! it's crochet! it's for Socchan!), so I'm not going to grouch about it in front of them. I'll probably just hold onto it until I can find a decent geeky swap meet, or just take it to Half Price Books or something.

Lol. That puts me in mind of when I was an anime-loving teen and would get just... random anime things from family members for shows I'd never seen or of characters I didn't know. They'd just see "oh, it's an anime keychain! She likes anime stuff!"
I had about the same reactions to it, too. Like... I'm touched that you tried, lol.

Though it does seem like they should at least have noticed that you don't use other patterns. Ah well. It's the thought that counts and all, ha.

I still get some of that on the anime and Japanese culture side, so I guess I can say I've had plenty of time to practice 😂 And to be truthful, I have hung onto some random pattern books for inspiration. IDK, maybe one day, when the Plague is something like actually over, I'll be back at AnimeIowa and host a Crochet/Amigurumi 101 panel and do a giveaway.

Yeah, lol. People who aren't so much into geeky things themselves, but know YOU like geeky things sometimes just... don't understand that not all geeky things are created equal, lol.
