Anther story I'm not writing
Jun. 16th, 2022 10:36 pmInspired by the reviews and examinations of genderpocalypse/gender rapture books by writer and activist Ana Mardoll, I've been thinking to myself: How would I approach writing a genderpocalypse story? And I've gotta say, I've had a bit of fun teasing out the details to myself.
( The details )
So, what would your approach to a genderpocalypse story be?

So, what would your approach to a genderpocalypse story be?
Okay, here we go!
( Part Two: Gender and Sexuality )
Summing up:
* Most cultures recognize six genders, mostly alligned with assigned sexes, but are beginning to recognize and accept non-binary (Solar), non-trinary (Lunar), and non-hexary[?] (both/either) genders
* Delta individuals are intersex based not only on ambiguous genetalia, but on unusual hormone production and experiencing cycles not consistent with their assigned sex
* The prescription for both trans and Delta individuals is primarily acceptance, support, and medical and gender autonomy
* Anyone who is not cis, perisex [not intersex/Delta], or allo-attracted to the genders they would be (most likely to be) able to sexually reproduce with is queer
* There are special ace and aro identities for those who feel specific attractions only when in heat/rut themselves, or toward someone who is themselves in heat/rut
* Attraction to Betas of a gender one can't typically reproduce with is considered typical/accepted for heats/ruts, but not for long term relationships
I think this is about it for gender and sexuality stuff? Lemme know what I'm missing or if I need to add more detail on anything, and especially if I messed up badly somewhere. And if you're just curious about something, questions are definitely welcome :)b

I keep drifting in and out of academic language here ._.a
Also, full disclosure: This has probably been percolating in my brain since
askerian made a Tumblr post pointing out that Betas didn't really have much influence in A/B/O dynamics and that was super boring. Said Tumblr post quickly got out of control, though, so I've decided to keep this stuff here on Dreamwidth unless prompted otherwise (though other folks are welcome to share if you'd like).
( Part One: Reproduction and the Sexes )
In summation:
* There are six-plus sexes, divided by Solar (male/female, assigned at birth) and Lunar (Alpha/Beta/Omega, assigned at sexual maturity) categories; most people fall under two categories, but Delta (intersex) individuals may fall under less (note: not fewer) or more
* Assigned Female and Assigned Omega individuals can become pregnant; Assigned Male and Assigned Alpha individuals can impregnate
* Heat and Rut cycles as commonly understood are caused by long term exposure to Beta pheromones; at least one Beta must be sexually attracted to at least two other individuals, at least one of whom they can reproduce with, to begin producing these pheromones; without exposure to this Beta pheromone, heats and ruts occur only twice a year, at the solstices [subject to change]
* Heats and ruts are actually more enjoyable with at least one Beta involved, likely due to the production of the aforementioned pheromones, leading to a high prevalence of stable triads involving at least one Beta
(This probably needs a lot more work, but I'm leaving it here for now. This has been a lot of words and Figuring Things Out. Up next is probably a lot of cultural stuff, like gender and queerness. Probably mostly gender and queerness, really.)

Me last night: Okay, I need to be up extra early tomorrow because the weather is being obnoxious again and I am overly cautious, so tonight I am actually going to turn out the light at a reasonable hour.
Bedtime: *approaches*
Me: *manages to get the light out shortly after 8pm*
Me: UGH I am so tired, but I made it! I managed it! Hooray!
Brain: Hey.
Me: ...yes?
Brain: You need something to think about while you're falling asleep, right?
Me: ...that is our usual arrangement, yes.
Brain: Cool! *ahem*
Brain: "Facilitators: An exploration of the cultural history and knowledge of Betas and their role in triggering heat and rut cycles"
Me: ...what
Brain: "Contrary to centuries of popular belief, Omega heats and Alpha ruts are neither wholly random, nor entirely cyclical; instead, they are frequently triggered by exposure to Beta pheromones. In this essay I will--"
Me: What
Brain: Oh man, it would be super cool, right? Like, there have been studies done, and when segregated in to groups of only Alphas and Omegas with no Betas, their ruts and heats do turn cyclical but only occur, like, twice a year, whereas in a group mixed with Betas they seem like they happen randomly but are actually triggered whenever A's and O's spend a significant amount of time around a B who finds them sexually attractive (more details to follow).
Brain: And obviously different cultures figured this out at different rates, but the ancient Greeks and Romans were kinda shitheads about stuff, and Europe mostly adopted their ideas during the Renaissance, and then European colonialism, so.
Brain: Oooo, and then we can talk about the interplay of gender and sexuality in a society with six primary sexes! (Also intersex people, because we are absolutely not going to forget them. They will henceforth be known as Deltas, because yes.) And the dynamics of being trans and dysphoria are completely different, though I'm going to point-blank decide that hormone therapy in this universe is very effective and super easy to acquire and take, and also pretty well accepted in most places, because the genders are a lot more mixed and better acknowledged than they are here.
Brain: Also there are absolutely ace and aro folks whose identities are influenced by heats and ruts. Like, there are people who feel no sexual and/or romantic attraction at all, except when in heat/rut (or spending a partner's heat/run with them), and vice-versa, as well as all the variations we know in our world, including never experiencing sexual and/or romantic attraction.
Brain: ...Are you taking notes? Because this is important.
Me: *whimpers* I just want to sleep!

(My brain didn't actually get into this much detail until the drive home today, but it was still a helluva thought train to be hit by on the way to catch some Z's.)
