Me last night: Okay, I need to be up extra early tomorrow because the weather is being obnoxious again and I am overly cautious, so tonight I am actually going to turn out the light at a reasonable hour.
Bedtime: *approaches*
Me: *manages to get the light out shortly after 8pm*
Me: UGH I am so tired, but I made it! I managed it! Hooray!
Brain: Hey.
Me: ...yes?
Brain: You need something to think about while you're falling asleep, right?
Me: ...that is our usual arrangement, yes.
Brain: Cool! *ahem*
Brain: "Facilitators: An exploration of the cultural history and knowledge of Betas and their role in triggering heat and rut cycles"
Me: ...what
Brain: "Contrary to centuries of popular belief, Omega heats and Alpha ruts are neither wholly random, nor entirely cyclical; instead, they are frequently triggered by exposure to Beta pheromones. In this essay I will--"
Me: What
Brain: Oh man, it would be super cool, right? Like, there have been studies done, and when segregated in to groups of only Alphas and Omegas with no Betas, their ruts and heats do turn cyclical but only occur, like, twice a year, whereas in a group mixed with Betas they seem like they happen randomly but are actually triggered whenever A's and O's spend a significant amount of time around a B who finds them sexually attractive (more details to follow).
Brain: And obviously different cultures figured this out at different rates, but the ancient Greeks and Romans were kinda shitheads about stuff, and Europe mostly adopted their ideas during the Renaissance, and then European colonialism, so.
Brain: Oooo, and then we can talk about the interplay of gender and sexuality in a society with six primary sexes! (Also intersex people, because we are absolutely not going to forget them. They will henceforth be known as Deltas, because yes.) And the dynamics of being trans and dysphoria are completely different, though I'm going to point-blank decide that hormone therapy in this universe is very effective and super easy to acquire and take, and also pretty well accepted in most places, because the genders are a lot more mixed and better acknowledged than they are here.
Brain: Also there are absolutely ace and aro folks whose identities are influenced by heats and ruts. Like, there are people who feel no sexual and/or romantic attraction at all, except when in heat/rut (or spending a partner's heat/run with them), and vice-versa, as well as all the variations we know in our world, including never experiencing sexual and/or romantic attraction.
Brain: ...Are you taking notes? Because this is important.
Me: *whimpers* I just want to sleep!

(My brain didn't actually get into this much detail until the drive home today, but it was still a helluva thought train to be hit by on the way to catch some Z's.)

Date: 2019-02-25 02:41 am (UTC)2) I was actually thinking more along the lines of a possible fantasy setting, but I reeeeeaaally need to get more details worked out first. (Though I would not object to Marinette/Luka/Adrien where Marinette is an Alpha and the other two are the other two Cyclical genders, and I'm not particularly sure which. Though Brain suggests Alpha!Chloe for rivalry.)

Date: 2019-02-25 03:55 am (UTC)So a cis perisex Alpha woman who is allo-attracted to men and Omegas would be straight, whereas a cis perisex Alpha woman who is allo-attracted to men of all Cyclical genders but not Omega women would be a flavor of queer. ...And that feels a little weird to type, so I can't imagine how it is to read.
(Possibly attraction to all Beta genders would also fall under Straight, especially since in this universe Beta hormones promote fertility, but also possibly not because Society and Weird Sexual Hangups. More thought required.) (Basically, Beta hormones act kinda like a sexual catalyst? I think that's about right.)
(Also, perisex = not intersex, if you haven't come across that term before.)
Again, lots to work out still, no idea what sort of story I would be telling anyway, but that's where I'd want to start, and if I or someone else happened to write a ML AU of it, that would be A+ Fine And Dandy by me. (Kagami would also work in that sandwich instead of Luka, yes.
Or in addition, if we're going there....Alpha!Marinette and Alpha!Chloe double-teaming Beta(?)Adrien would also be kinda hot, now that I'm thinking about it.)no subject

Date: 2019-02-25 04:37 am (UTC)Considered so far, but highly unlikely:
* Early Gender and Late Gender (could be confusing with transitioning from genders; also, I have difficulty picturing anyone saying their early gender is female or male, cis and trans alike.)
* First Gender and Second Gender (it sounds like I'm ranking them, which is Weird and Unnecessary)
* Static/Stable Gender and Cyclical Gender (for some folks, one or both of these genders is fluid; otherwise, though, the genders stay the same, making this Also Confusing)
Something to compliment "cyclical" would be best. Solar for AGAB and Lunar for Cyclical maybe? That could work... I think I may go with that, unless you have any suggestions that might work better?

Date: 2019-02-25 04:57 am (UTC)For example, since someone can be trans in one, both, or neither gender, it would be helpful (in community and for getting assistance) to differentiate: "I'm cis-lunar but trans-solar" or whatever.
(I may have ...problems with ABO universes that pretend that any dynamics based on AGAB wouldn't exist, especially while still using only he/she pronouns based on AGAB.)

Date: 2019-02-25 05:40 pm (UTC)So I mostly concentrated on remembering the important part ("Betas facilitate Alpha ruts and Omega heats by being attracted to them, and Beta pheromones can make heats/ruts feel better and also make the participants more fertile") and trying not to get sucked into figuring out the rest while it was time to sleep, goddaammit. I've got the day off now, though, and plenty of time to think it through and elaborate on stuff :3b
