If you like:
* Kickass ladies being awesome
* Stories that explore fairy tales to a greater depth and/or turn cliches on their heads
* Writing that deals with complex issues in a realistic and respectful way
* Thorough world building
And want to support an author who both writes well and has good politics++?
You might want to give The Stepsister Scheme+ by Jim C. Hines a look.
I just finished reading it, and it is all that and a bag of chips. (And yes, I am willing to go into more detail, if asked ;) ) As soon as I can find Goblin Quest (or get it on reserve in the library, or order it, or SOMETHING), it's next on the list - provided this is before October, when the next Princess book gets out.
+ DISCLAIMER: You are not required to like this book. If you do not like this book, I will not hate you forever. In fact, I will not even dislike you for more than three seconds. Different people have different tastes, and that is fine. Although, if you do like it, I wanna know, so I can fan it up in several different ways with you ;)
++ As of the time I'm writing this, it's still Sexual Assault Awareness Month for another twenty-six hours or so. A teensy bit more awareness-spreading would be kinda sorta nice :( But maybe that's just me. (Hint! Nice, short, copy-paste-able text available in this post!)
And now, I sleep.
