OrigiFic: King Art: 1/1
Feb. 26th, 2005 08:48 pmIn celebration of my getting to read Chretien de Troyes' Arthurian Romances and loving all over them (as predicted), I present a short bit of original parody fiction that I wrote in tenth grade (two years ago). It was for a class assignment ("Write a King Arthur parody"), and I hope you also get a laugh out of it ^^v.
Fandom: None/Arthurian Legends (parody)
Summary: The land calls for a new King.
OrigiFic: King Art

Art was skipping English class when he came upon a sword stuck in a monument. Bored and curious, as most High School boys are, he casually pulled on the hilt; the blade slid out like butter. A light surrounded him, and a voice sounded from the heavens.
"Arthur!" it said.
"What do you want?" Art asked, irritated with the mature-sounding voice. He never did like authority figures.
"You have pulled the sword Excalibur from the football monument! You shall be the next King of New England!"
Art frowned. "What do you mean, 'King'? You mean like president?"
"Well, yes, in effect, but your term will be much longer than four years."
"Will I still be able to play video games?"
"Well... not quite... You're going to have to go on quests across the country to unite the Kingdom under your rule."
Art's face fell. "Oh, okay then. Well, will I be able to at least finish High School? I mean, it's not much, but I do kinda want to go to my senior prom."
"Why, certainly you must further your education!"
"Cool!" Art exclaimed. "I'll just leave this here, and get back to class..."
"Wait! You must always carry the sword with you!"
"You don't mean that."
"I do."
"Even to the john?"
"Yes."
"This sucks! Okay, I don't care if I do get to be President, no way am I doing this job." Art approached the monument.
"Wait! You must!"
"I'll get suspended!"
"But you will be King!"
"I don't care!" With that, Art proudly put the sword back into the monument and started back toward the school.
"Wait! Wait! You can't go! You have to rule the country!" The voice called after him. Art was out of sight. "Oh, fudge," the voice muttered, "There goes another one."

Looking back, I can see places where my writing has matured from what it was. I also only had an forty minutes, give or take, to write it, so that also accounts for some lack of detail. Still, I'm quite fond of this as I rarely get to write stories that flow as well as this one did.
Those of you who have read Sword of Kings will recognize my early wanderings into the realm of Arthurian Legend and new Kings ^^; I'm still proud of what I did with Sword of Kings, but I'll probably go back through and toy with this eventually, too. (It has such potential! The Lady of the Lunchroom! Art's best friend, the French-Canadian Lance! His cheerleader girlfriend Gwen! His pagan step-sister Morgan (no relation)! The possibilities!)
It's official: I'm an Arthurian Legends geek.
