LADIES, GENTS, AND ESTEEMED NON-BINARY FOLKS, HOW GREAT IS THIS SHOW?
A) Great
B) Really great
C) The greatest ever
Oh my gawd, I am just in love with this show all over again. I need to make myself some ATLA/ATLOK Dreamsheep icons ASAP. (I am totally pronouncing it "Atlock" in my head; is anyone else doing that? And then, by natural progression, ATLA becomes "Atla", like atlas without the 's' at the end. It doesn't work quite as well, but it's less of a mouthful than the entire title all the time, which is basically needed to distinguish it from Space Pocahontas and The Movie That Shall Not Be Named.)
I need to look up Tenzin's kids' names, because otherwise I'm just going to be calling them by birth order, and that's not right. I'm liking his eldest best at the moment, but that could just be because she's the most mature. Also 'cuz she asked about Zuko's mom, though watch me be not even remotely surprised that Mike and Bryan baited us like that, lol. That's them all over, what with all the trolling they've done in the past.
Speaking of Mike and Bryan! I would bet money that Mako and Korra's relationship was heavily influenced by the Zutara fans; while I never delved into that part of fandom myself (or much of the fandom at all, aside from keeping up with episodes and limited merchandise and cosplay and social justice stuff), the dynamic Mako and Korra (Makorra?) have in the show is similar to the dynamic I'd imagine Zutara has in fic and fandom. To the extent that I thought of it at all, I wanted to think that Mike and Bryan were teasing the Zutara coalition out of affection rather than malice or contempt, and the fact that they're playing up what may be a similar dynamic in the sequel series adds some credence to my hypothesis. If Bryke truly hated Zutara, they wouldn't be doing anything like something similar in this series. Anyway, I'm fairly certain I'm going to end up shipping Makorra(???), though canon evidence (or lack thereof) will likely decide me in the end.
That said, I do have a soft spot for Bo Lin! And Bo Lin and Korra together. If he and Mako weren't brothers, I'd probably end up OT3ing them with Korra, but they are, and I don't usually go for incest ships. Of course, if they weren't related, fandom would probably be slashing the two of them left and right, so I suppose it's for the best. (Not that incest will stop much of fandom, but...) Twosomes are pretty much always more popular than threesomes, more's the pity.
How glad am I that Appa was not the last flying bison? SO GLAD, let me tell you! I am the gladdest. This show wouldn't be the same without flying bison! Not that I don't love polar bear dogs, because Naga is awesome, but the thought of Appa being the last flying bison in the world oft made my heart heavy while the first series was still going, and it has been lightened by knowing he is not the end of the species.
And Lin! Oh wow, Lin ♥ Badass metalbender lady with scars, OMFG ♥_♥ I hope we get to see yet more older ladies being badass and leaderly, since that was my basic complaint about the first series: not enough older ladies being badass or leaders.
That's all I have for now, I think? I mean, I'm pretty sure I have more thoughts, but I'd have to watch the episodes a few more times before I can articulate them properly. Or just talk about the episodes with folks! That would work, too.
I am 100% looking forward to next Saturday's episode!
