soc_puppet: Words "Baseless Opinion" in orange (Baseless Opinion)
I shared this on Tumblr, so I thought I'd put it here as well. These are my personal rules for wearing a mask.

If I am in an indoor space that is not my home, I will wear a mask if:

- There are more than five people in the room, including me, for longer than five minutes at a time
- It is an area with high traffic
- Any of the other people there are wearing a mask
- I am not confident that every other person there has been fully vaccinated for Covid (minimum full original course, one or more boosters preferred)

This means I do sometimes take my mask off at work, and might if I'm visiting someone's house. Not that I've had much occasion to visit anywhere but my brother's family these days. It's reasonably close to the first "Yes, you can visit other people" guidelines that the CDC announced after the vaccine became more publicly available, just plus one extra person.

This also means that there are some people at work that I don't unmask around, because I have asked and they've flat-out told me that they haven't gotten vaccinated. At this point, I figure that if they've decided not to vaccinate, I'm not going to be able to change their minds by confronting them about it. If they decide that they're curious later, I can share my own reasons for getting the vaccine, and they can have another chance to decide if those reasons are good enough for them personally; otherwise, I'll keep my mouth shut. I also don't ask about their reasons for not vaccinating, because I don't want to be any angrier than I already am, either at them (more likely) or at The System (forcing people who cannot get vaccinated back into the workforce/public/etc).

And with no good reason to procrastinate, really.

This past week, I've been pretty darn productive! Brickspace Log )

It's looking pretty good! It seems pretty well sealed up, and while I've still got a persistent scab in the area closest to the knuckle where there was also the most infection, it seems like a pretty normal scab and I'm reasonably sure everything is good to stick together. The area is still a little painful to stretch in some ways or when it's bumped, but that's not too surprising. I plan to still treat it a little delicately at least until the scab goes away, possibly a little after, but I'm cautiously saying that I'm in the clear.

Putting some more info under the cut; it's not particularly graphic or detailed, but some people are more sensitive to medical stuff than others.

Shortest version: The brace is off! )

Edit: Okay, the shower may have overdone it, but at least now I'm clean and can take it easy again. Brace is back on overnight at least; we'll see what tomorrow brings.

Got cut at work; had to get stitches on my thumb. Otherwise fine. Wearing a thumb brace for at least a day, so typing will be slow/low priority for me.

Woo-hoo!

I've finally got December's public prompt post up on [community profile] kittens_and_spitefic! The theme is gift giving, since I figure that's pretty easy story bait in December, but I tried to mention as many possible gifting excuses and occasions as I could think of.

I also officially need to talk to my doctor about fatigue now, because I miss having energy to do things. Like make more than one somewhat-thought-intensive post on a work day. I think I'll go write an email to ask about adding a B vitamin supplement to my diet, especially since I stopped drinking so much Gatorade.

Success!

I have successfully returned from getting my first filling! It was... a lot. I'm getting my care through the local dental college, so appointments average around three hours; my last one ended a little earlier than that, so this one balanced the scales by ending a little later. The pain was rare and minimal, but the metal collar for my molar slipped a good four times before the procedure was over, and my jawmeats are a bit tender now. But! Teeth protected! Further cavities and pain less likely! Preventative dental medicine: Achieved! Also the tiny chip in #7 I got in late May has been patched up, making it easier to floss and more pleasant to feel with my tongue.

In other news, [community profile] kittens_and_spitefic is also off to a roaring purring start ๐Ÿ˜บ I don't know if it'll be able to keep up this momentum, but if the comm manages even one post a month by someone who's not me, with at least one person who's not me responding to posts, I think I will be able to consider it a success.

I'm back from the dentist with mostly good news!

The awesome news is that the dental student who was working with me told me I have beautiful gums. Like "out of a textbook diagram" beautiful. I am apparently an exception to the "We mark everyone down with gingivitis" rule, as well. (I don't think I was supposed to hear the "we say everyone has it" part ๐Ÿ˜‚ The subtext there was, "So many people have it, we may as well save ourselves the time," I think.)

The less good news is that I have my first ever in-need-of-formal-work cavity ๐Ÿ˜“ I've had a couple of itty-bitty ones before that healed up on their own, but the faculty dentist said this one was just a teensy bit too far gone for that. So I'm getting my first filling.

But still, I made it thirty-five years without any really serious cavities, and even this one is just barely bad enough to need work! All things told, I think I came out ahead.

That RSD feel when people keep piling on you because you are vocal about not liking that the con you've been working for 14 years:

1) Has changed their mask policy from "mandatory" to "recommended"
2) Did not give the staff at large a chance to comment on this change
3) Made the change public and official without informing the staff at large via email, thus going against convention bylaws

Dear brain, can we work out a thing where you don't actually make me feel like shit for trying to defend the health and safety of the con-goers and trying to make sure that staff-at-large is included in big decisions that affect the entire con? Because I would really appreciate that!

(Hugs very welcome, as are cute and funny animal stories. Also people reassuring me that I'm doing the right thing, because I know I am, I know, but brain weasels are being very loud ๐Ÿ˜ฅ It probably wouldn't be so bad if I had at least one person to back me up in the staff Discord, but... Well, last I checked it was five against one, and my staunchest ally is on a camping trip and unavailable to help. I'm not sure I dare to look again just yet.)

There's a lot to dislike about Covid, but for me right now, the most annoying thing is that mild symptoms are basically indistinguishable from other shit I deal with on the regular.

Like... Is this Covid giving me post-nasal drip, or is it my spring pollen allergies in full swing?

Is it Covid that's giving me indigestion, or is it just my extra-sensitive garbage gut acting up because I ate something that was slightly too old?

Is this fatigue I'm feeling Covid-related, or is it just because I'm neurodivergent and stressed all to hell?

Am I sore because of Covid, or because I'm in my mid-thirties and work a physically demanding job? (Not a huge worry recently, since I've been off the past three days and don't expect to be back at work until June 1st at the earliest, but one that has bothered me in the past.)

How safe do I play it? All of these things could conceivably be happening without Covid, and I'm not sure I'd notice if they're only a little bit worse than normal. Do I assume that they're all symptoms and report as such, or do I assume I'm asymptomatic and go back to work on Wednesday? The safest bet would be to assume they're symptoms and stay home the full ten days, but I still have doubts plaguing me about the Covid test I took being actually positive in the first place.

I am probably at least going to take another Covid test tonight, to hopefully get my brain to shut up about whether the one that canceled my weekend plans was "real" or not. That might at least help me decide re: symptoms.

Edit: Okay, this most recent test is a different brand than the one from Wednesday, and I gotta say, props to whoever made the directions: Including actual photos of positive results was definitely the way to go. Made me more confident about that other test being positive, even if they're not the same kind of test strip.

Sigh

Ha ha ha ha ha!

Took a Covid test this morning, as planned. There was an extremely thin and faint line by the positive test check area, to the point where I could go either way on whether it was positive or negative and my parents were also split. Called the doctor to ask for advice, we'll be doing a telehealth check thing this afternoon. In the mean time, I will not be going to work today.

Update: Doc said to go ahead and assume the test results were positive. Apparently, most people catch it within five days of cohabitating with a contagious person, and even if Dad just barely falls outside the range, Mom doesn't.

I did all I could to improve my odds, but if you roll the the dice enough times, eventually it'll still come up a natural one. On the plus side, everything I did to improve my odds should make the actual experience of Covid less terrible and dangerous than otherwise.

I'll be staying home from WisCon. We'll see what happens after that. If I develop symptoms before May 30th, I stay home until June 4th; otherwise, May 30th is my "release date".

Between work and accidentally viral Tumblr posts, I've been pretty wiped out the past few days ๐Ÿ˜… I still want to update today, though!

Let's see, what can I talk about...

Oh! A big event that was originally scheduled for this weekend was moved to, like, April/May. I'm pretty jazzed about this, because Saturday is a big Pokรฉmon Go event, and I otherwise probably would've been working through it. (I'll finally be able to catch Corsola!)

My IUD follow-up appointment is on Friday morning, as well. I suspect the IUD will be coming back out, as I've been basically bleeding continually since it was put in ๐Ÿ˜ฉ It's also still kinda sore/uncomfortable in that region, and I sincerely hope that's not related to the fall I took a week or so after it was put in. Anyway, I may ask to go on my previous pill instead of something new, since I was actually doing pretty well on it, and only had any major complaints about that one extra long period where I'm pretty sure I missed a pill anyway. Taking a pill at roughly the same time every single day was a pain, but it's less of a pain than bleeding every single day, and getting my whole uterus removed in Plague Times also seems like not a great idea. Maybe in 2025 or so things will have gotten better enough for me to reconsider that.
soc_puppet: [Homestuck] God tier "Light" themed Dreamsheep (Sheep of Light)
It's been just over a day since I had the IUD put in, and I'm... feeling pretty good? At most I have very mild back pain, only a 1 on the pain scale. I ended up using only two of the three heat packs the hospital gave me, and haven't taken any painkillers yet today (though I might take one soon, for just-in-cases).

Considering I went to sleep with the full expectation that I would be cramping horribly within minutes of waking up, if not woken up by cramps in the first place, this is a pleasant surprise.

Edit: Currently need my heat pack again, but it's still worlds better than yesterday. Very cozy.
soc_puppet: [Homestuck] God tier "Blood" themed Dreamsheep (Sheep of Blood)
Just had an IUD put in today! (Hormonal type, not copper.) We'll see if it's any improvement on the pills. I mean, it's definitely an improvement over having to take another pill every day, but other than that. I can go back to the pill if I need to, though; it was a bit annoying, but the "no cramps" made up for things pretty well.

Meanwhile, brand new IUD means I'm experiencing cramps for the first time in over half a year ๐Ÿ˜‚ Time to make use of the heat packs the hospital generously gave me...

So

I had a doctor's appointment scheduled for 10am today. I had my alarm set for just after 9am, so I could get myself ready and get there on time. Usually I have my alarm set for 10:30am, because that's how much time I need to get to work by noon, but 9am isn't too bad.

8am comes around, and I get a call.

It's from the doctor's office. My PCP is working from home today, and my insurance probably won't cover video calls; would I be willing to reschedule?

Anyway, my physical is now scheduled for Valentine's Day, and that's the story of how I got to sleep in an extra couple of hours this morning.

Tomorrow morning at the hour of 8am: OB-GYN! ...Probably.
soc_puppet: Dreamsheep as Lumpy Space Princess from Adventure Time (Default)
Staying home from work today on account of my gut being garbage. I mean, it's not unusual for my digestive system to be on the irregular side, but this is waaaaay outside of my standard range of irregularity. I don't feel very lousy aside from needing to visit the restroom more often, at least, though I don't quite trust food at the moment and am skipping my meds so I don't waste them.

I'm hoping it's a 24 hour thing and I'll be able to go to work tomorrow, but if not, I'll make sure to go to urgent care. For now, relaxation and nap time, on account of rest is good for the body.

UPDATE: Apparently one of the students in the baking program (most of whom seem to dislike masks) tested positive for fucking Covid! Since lots of shitting and headaches are on the Covid Breakthrough Symptoms list, I went out and got a take-home test from City Hall. The test says they're hoping to provide results within 24 hours; in the mean time, I've got my fingers crossed and then some.
soc_puppet: [Homestuck] God tier "Doom" themed Dreamsheep (DOOOOOOOM)
Doctor agrees that current pills are also not working for my adenomyosis (and also said that it's sounding more and more to her like actual endo rather than off-brand endo, it's just that they didn't happen to find any growth spots outside the uterus walls in my ultrasound). After some brief chatting, we agreed that I'd see an OB-GYN for more detail/to get another brain on the problem before diving directly into an IUD. (Honestly, after this OJST strip (NSFW), I'm a little bit wary of IUDs, especially since heavy periods and cramps are what I'm trying to get rid of. But maybe it's not as bad with non-copper IUDs? ...Are there non-copper IUDs? Edit: Yes, there are; okay, then. /edit Edit 2: Info from Planned Parenthood! It looks like the heavier periods and more cramping thing is only a copper IUD thing, so I'm cautiously optimistic. /edit 2)

Did my level best to actually call an OB-GYN and make an appointment myself, but the doctor didn't actually recommend anyone, and the place the receptionist suggested doesn't take people on Medicaid ๐Ÿ˜ฉ And here I thought I'd manage to get one over on my executive dysfunction for once by taking care of things ASAP...

Other mildly disappointing things from the past few days:

1) Apparently the Hulu subscription we got free through Sprint is no longer good/a thing, so there goes the only streaming service I had; if they do the $2/month offer again for Black Friday Weekend this year, I may go for it.

2) Pod-type laundry detergent is bad for the washing machine! This sucks because I had very good experiences with pods after switching over from powder, because powder had a tendency to get stuck on my clothes rather than washing out completely (and has destroyed at least one garment). Time to research alternatives, I guess!
Edit 3: Snopes found the claim that laundry pods clog drains or ruin washing machines to be unproven. Which might be good news, except I'm not sure I can convince my parents to bet an appliance on that, and honestly I wouldn't blame them. Back to researching! (Bleh.)
Edit 4: Trying out these powder-only laundry pods, no plastic to worry about. Fingers crossed!
soc_puppet: [Homestuck] God tier "Blood" themed Dreamsheep (Sheep of Blood)
Welp, looks like it's time to call the doctor about my current birth control pills, because I'm back to absurd levels of spotting/smudging! It's not quite as bad as the first one I triedโ€”yetโ€”but I don't know if I want to wait and see if it gets that far. I think the next method on the list of things to try to combat my adenomyosis (read as: Off-brand Endo) is an IUD rather than a new pill, which at least I wouldn't have to worry about taking at the same time every day (thank God), but may also have some hellacious cramps to start out with.

I also need to call my mechanic, because my car is smelling a lot like gasoline, which seems like it might be a bad thing. Hopefully it's nothing too expensive or time consuming...
