Hello! You may be here because you saw me talking about Dreamwidth on Tumblr, or from my Dreamwidth tutorials at [community profile] newcomers or [community profile] the_great_tumblr_purge. Or maybe you here via one of the communities I run: [community profile] queerly_beloved, [community profile] moodthemeinayear, or [community profile] summerofthe69.

I mostly post about a combination of real life foibles, whatever projects I'm working on at a given time, and whatever fandom I'm into at the moment (currently The Scum Villain's Self-Saving System, as of April 2025). If you're interested in any of these, feel free to subscribe and stick around! You're welcome to introduce yourself in the comments of this post if you'd like, but feel no obligation; I fully support Lurkers in all of your forms 😉

If you want a quick link to a bunch of Dreamwidth guides, check here at Newcomers or here at The Great Tumblr Purge; my own Tumblr-oriented Dreamwidth guides I'll link below, as well:

Want to see all the moods for my Fancy Rats mood theme so far? Click here! This is the official mood theme page for it on Dreamwidth. As of today, August 21st 2024, it's effectively done, with thanks to [community profile] moodthemeinayear! I will post an official download link to the full mood theme sometime in December. Anyone who doesn't want to wait is welcome to download the images individually—which is a lot of work, so I may provide a download link earlier in this post, we'll see.

Edit: My Fancy Rats mood theme is now also an official site-supported Dreamwidth mood theme! That means that anyone can use it, no need to get a paid account! There are a few differences between the official version and my original version, so if you want to see all of the official rats, click here. [/edit]

Want to block the images for any reason? Under this cut tag is a list of all of the image links, so you can just copy-paste them into an ad blocker or whatever. Rat mood theme image links )

New as of August 21 (Plus some icons) )

And that should be all of them! The exception is if I add more rats as icons, which is possible, but probably not for a little while yet 😅

Go check out [personal profile] ao3_isdown! It's a journal that hosts fic prompt memes whenever AO3 goes down.

Prompts for the first meme are open for close to another three hours, as of this post; prompts will be open to fills for another week after the post closes to new prompts.

Anyway, go take a look! I've already made a little fill myself for Avery and Zeek, which I'll cross-post here, uh. Sooner or later, I promise!

I needed to do a five-to-seven minute history presentation for my Intro to Human Services class (with visual aids), and pick a topic from a pre-selected list; I chose the ADA, and presented on Wednesday. I got 100% 😃

Anyway, here's what I wrote, for anyone interested: The History of the ADA (sources linked at the end) )

Side note, one of my classmates picked the Tuskegee Syphilis Experiments, and her presentation was both fantastic and available on YouTube! Great use of humor to balance out a very dark topic. If you've got about six minutes, I recommend giving it a watch 👍

Contrary to my expectations, I managed to (effectively*) finish my yarn bowl on Wednesday after all!

Two un-fired clay works; on the left is an upside-down yarn bowl, on the right is a fish balanced on its lips.

(Click for a larger version of the photo.)

Here's the yarn bowl and also the fish, in their no-longer-current glory; they're in the "greenware" state in this photo, which means they haven't been fired even once yet. I'm pretty sure they're undergoing their first, or "bisque", firing this weekend, and that I'm going to get to do some glazing on Monday, but I'd need to check the schedule to be sure 😂

In any case, I'm pretty pleased with them so far! I'm looking forward to the fun things I'll get to do with them in the glazing stage 😁

I have been informed that the placement of the crochet hook holes and yarn catching wave on the bowl make it look "distressed", and that "it looks like it was dropped and having a crisis about it." I'm sure it'll appreciate all my hard work in the end, though 😜

* I did end up having to stop by very briefly on Thursday afternoon to touch up the base, but that's nowhere near as much work as I was expecting.

Big project for Intro to Human Services: History project (5 to 7 minute presentation, needs visual aid(s)); can work in groups of up to three. I'm working solo, and my project is on the history of the ADA. It's due Monday the 22nd, aaaaand I haven't really done a lot yet 😑 On the plus side, no homework next week?

No big project for Social Problems! I just gotta read another textbook chapter, originally by Thursday but now possibly not until Tuesday. (I may try for Thursday anyway.) No Asynchronous Course Materials this week, because last week's was two-and-a-half hours long.

Big project for Ceramics: Two coil-and-pinch projects due for bisque (initial, pre-glaze) firing by end of day Friday. I've got one finished, and have only barely started the second. To be fair, I tried starting the second twice already, and had to scrap it both times, because I just kept pinching the bowl larger when I was trying to smooth the coils together. And then yesterday, though I finished cleaning up my fish (that I love and can't wait to share), we did some practice of taking stuff out of the kiln, and that ate up some class time I would have otherwise used to work on my bowl.

Our next class period, tomorrow, will be dedicated to Raku firing our test pieces, so I doubt I'll have a lot of time to work then, and will have to leave class ASAP to get to an appointment back home. So I anticipate staying late on Thursday and coming in on Friday, neither of which is an official Ceramics day, to finish my bowl.

I probably should not have slacked off quite as much as I did over the weekend, but slacking off felt so gooooood 😭 Ah, well; back to work!

So I got a postcard today informing me that I made the Dean's List?

Someone explain how proud I should be of this. It's a community college, and I only took two classes this summer, but that's also after having taken no classes for eleven years and with ADHD, so.

Like, I'm on board with being pleasantly chuffed, but is this a "Go out to dinner at a reasonably fancy restaurant to celebrate" kind of situation, a "Brag to all my friends and relatives" situation, or what?

(My parents are very proud, and insisted I put the postcard on the fridge. My mom also confided in me that she never made the Dean's List when she was in school, even once. And she did go to a junior college, but she also went to an actual university, so. Data point not entirely helpful.)
soc_puppet: A crude pencil drawing on lined paper of what's supposed to be a dog; the dog's mouth and eyes are on one side of its face, while its snout is on the other. (Art time!)
I've finished both my fics for [community profile] pokepodproject! The first one (Xatu) is already submitted to the collection, while I want to give the second one (Sneasel) another going-over before I submit it.

I also managed to finish an extra short about Smeargle; I'm waiting to see if Smeargle needs a pinch hit before I submit it anywhere. If Smeargle's covered, the fic will still go up as a Rare Candy.

Fuuuuuuuck

Week one for Social Problems class:
- Read one chapter of your textbook
- Write an essay on a half-hour documentary

Week two for Social Problems class:
- Read one chapter of your textbook
- Write an essay on a half-hour documentary

This week for Social Problems class:
- Read two chapters of your textbook, one for Tuesday and one for Thursday
- Write an essay on a two(-and-a-half?) hour documentary

Next week for Social Problems class:
- Read two chapters of your textbook, also one for Tuesday and one for Thursday
- At least there's no documentary to write an essay on!
- Oh wait, you get to study for an exam taking place on the first day of Week 5 instead
- Welp! Good luck with that!

I'll tell you what a social problem is, I'm going to be a social problem if I have to keep this up 🤬

Okay. Okay, I can do this. I'm very glad I checked the class schedule today, because that means I can get a solid handle on my energy needs and get started on that reading ASAP. I can manage this. (If I didn't like these teachers I would be so fucked.)

Edit: Just emailed my Intro to Human Services teacher (not this class, but also more homework-heavy than I'd like) to say that I'm borderline struggling and also help please. She's been pretty vocal about wanting to help us if she can, so. Fingers crossed!

(I think it's mostly not getting quite enough sleep? Plus, you know, the background fascism. I read ahead in one of my textbooks, and I'm taking this upcoming Sunday off, so that should help some. Also, Sot69 is done for the year, so I don't have to worry about or work on that at all. Once PokéPod is done, I'll have no major fandom obligations that I can't just schedule posts for, so I'm hoping that I'll be doing better in two weeks.)

Honestly, this helps me psych myself up and keep on top of stuff, so I might make it a weekly thing. Just a heads up.

Okay, looking good! I'm going to try and finish my written assignments for class tonight, and if I do so with enough time/energy left over, I may "reward" myself by typing up and posting my first completed Poképod Project draft.

Edit: Ah, frick, I forgot I still have to make tea for work tomorrow!

Me, today: Okay, this is it! Today, I'm going to be really good, and do my class readings and work on my homework, so I can take tomorrow off and finish anything else up on Sunday!

Me: *spends free time writing fanfic and not!fic instead*

Me: ...Well, that didn't work.

I'm going to try and at least read a chapter or two of my textbook before going to sleep, if nothing else. Damn you, college homework!

Reading: One chapter of each textbook: Done!

Two to five page autobiography for Human Services: About half done? It's a little over a page, and I've covered a lot of the material I'm supposed to.
Due date: Sunday night, 11:59pm

Watch video for Social Problems: Done
Take notes on video for Social Problems, including at least three observations on specific time stamps: Not yet
Due date: Sunday night, 11:59pm

I'm going to try and get my autobiography at least another quarter done tonight, and then I might call it quits for the evening.

Alas 😔

Okay, time for me to be realistic: With classes starting again and homework being A Thing already, I need to not push myself to finish my second Sot69 fic for this year.

I want to finish it! I do! And I want to have at least one more thing done for Sot69 this year! But if I push myself, I'm pretty sure that things won't go well. Even with no class or work on Monday, there's no guarantee that'd be enough recovery time for me, especially with Saturday now my only guaranteed day of the week with neither class nor work.

I think I'll probably at least try to get the outline I have typed up. (Actually, now that I think about it, that might even be a good entry for the final theme of Failed 69!) But I'm not going to pressure myself into writing the whole thing.

The important thing is, even if I don't finish it by September 6th, I can still finish it in the future!

Got my assignments for [community profile] pokepodproject!

I'm writing about Xatu and Sneasel. Xatu's got a pretty cool design in general, and I've been a fan of Sneasel pretty much since I first laid eyes on it. Reading their 'dex entries and lore on Bulbapedia got me a plunny for Sneasel already, but I'm still working on finding one for Xatu.

If you haven't checked out the fics/podfic from last year, I recommend it! It was a long listen (about ten and a half hours total), but I loved almost every fic, and keep meaning to go back and comment on all of them.
soc_puppet: Words "Creative Process" in purple (Creative Process)
IDK if I'll ever put it in a fic or anything, but the words "Eight-Legged Spider Hawk" spontaneously generated themselves in my brain as I was preparing for my evening ablutions.

My first reaction to this thought was that Peerless Cucumber absolutely roasted Airplane in the comments when this monster made its debut, because he thought that "Eight-Legged" and "Spider" were redundant. Airplane retaliated by introducing Six-Legged and Ten-Legged Spider Hawks in the next chapter, including important distinctions between the species.

I don't know about the six- or ten-legged varieties, but here's the lore I came up with for the eight-legged ones:

Appears very much like a very large spider with hawk's wings, it is often mistaken for one in flight or while hunting. Its movement on the ground, however, is unmistakable. These creatures line their nests with a particular type of silk that makes exquisite bondage rope.

The ten- and six-legged varieties probably have somewhat different venom or are more prized for their feathers or something.

Classes start up again on Monday!

Okay, I'm cool, I'm good, I'm collected; I can do this.

Right now I'm trying to decide if it's worth it to me to start taking the bus to and from classes. There's a specific bus that goes from my hometown to the college campus I'm attending, a thirty minute drive away, and financially it might be a good idea overall. It's just that one of the classes I'm taking would have me out the door by 8:30 AM, and that's a smidge earlier than I like to get up these days 😅

Still, it's doable! The bus stop for the in town bus is under a block from my house, so it's not a particularly arduous walk—or at least it's not too much worse than just walking to where I've parked my car. It would be better for the environment and would save wear and tear on my (aging) vehicle. Even taking the bus three days a week might be good enough.

So my plan is, probably on Thursday and maybe on Friday as well, take the (free) in town bus to the interchange and then back home. If I really want to give a solid go of it, I'll also give the town-to-campus bus a try, but we'll see how I feel about spending $7 on that. I'll also want to start turning the lights out earlier, preferably tonight.

Fingers crossed for cheap textbooks and sparse homework!

MQF: Shixiong, why is your blood purple?

SY: Oh right! it’s okay I was hit with the misty eyed-transfusion-curse-of-papapa pollen but I took the antidote so now I sprout a daisy every time I pee. It’s basically the closest thing to a cure haha and the only other treatment is heavenly demon blood so what are you gonna do, amirite?

I've been playing this game for just over a week now, and already the difficulty scaling is past where I find the rewards worth it. Most of the puzzles are around difficulty level 4 to 6 now, and I'm just not figuring enough of them out in the time limit I'm given. I'll still get some yarn when I finish the designated three puzzle set, but if I fail any of the puzzles, it's the lower quality yarn—even though the point total from all the puzzles, failures included, is higher than when I was playing the games on their lowest difficulty.

If I were getting more yarn per try, it might be worth it to me to keep playing. If the timers were more generous, it might be worth it to me. If I could choose which puzzles to play and which yarn to work towards, or if the difficulty scaling were a bit slower, it might be worth it to me. But at this point, I'll probably just play a few more days out of sunk cost fallacy driven hope, and then try to forget I even bought the damn game. Which is a shame, because I'd really love to have some sort of apartment-decorating game with the mechanics from the main room that I loved so much.

Honestly, I'd originally bought this game with the hopes of playing some of the puzzles with my niblings, but with how the game's set up, I'm not sure I'd even be able to reach all of the games, let alone be able to play in a way that didn't leave all of us frustrated in the end.

This disappointment aside, if Nintendo ever decided to put out a simple version of Voltorb Flip that works the same way as it does in HGSS, maybe for $2 or so, I'd buy that in a heartbeat. (They won't, they'd want to microtransaction and dark pattern the hell out of it, but that doesn't stop me from wanting it!)
